asking all experts. chicks scratching at ears

Found this on a search. We had his happen with one of our chicks. It started immediately after the hatch and did not improve. It won't make it as we can't feed it or water it. Even if you hold it, it seems as if there is someting wrong (would hold head "chin" down, beak open and "toss" head...

    What to feed my ducks?

Depends, but must be NON-MEDICATED FEED. I recommend duck/goose starter if you can get it. we used chick starter and learned the hard way that ducklings grow too fast and the extra protein in chick starter can lead to joint/bone problems. It can also lead to a niacin deficiency. If you use...

    chickens mating with ducks???

Fried chicken or separate them. Guess he got lucky. I've had roosters and ducks for 2 years but have never had a problem yet. If so, they'd be split off from eachother asap.

    Broken leg or dislocated?

topically I don't think so. Especially since it is no longer "swollen", just a different shape. Whenever I check on her she is standing, more or less, and not spending all her time lying down so that's a good sign!

    Broken leg or dislocated?

Thanks for the info Threehorses. When I went back with hubby to have a better look it is definately the hock joint. It is swollen a bit but more because it now looks "flat" compared to the other. I do not believe it is a break now, so we decided not to wrap as we could have caused more harm...

    Broken leg or dislocated?

I'm assuming this is not a common thing in young birds. Ours are 3 months. Noticed today a young pullet limping, but putting a little weight on her leg. Went over and picked her up to check. She flexes her toes, and does not show obvious pain (but I know animals won't show it if they can...

uh oh heat lamp hatch - ideas & support welcome here!

Well some of you may have seen our rescue chick did not make it. That same day however I took the last 3 eggs from the nest as she was obviously done setting. Candled them and figured one was probably just about ready, one another week to go (or dead at that point), and the other was all black...

    URGENT - NEW HATCH ABANDONED

Thanks everyone - it's nervewracking! The first one hatched June 3rd and we saw there were 5 up and running fluffballs by June 5. We were going to take these last eggs away when they hatched June 7. There are 3 other eggs - I stuck them under the heat lamp. She's sleeping (and I should...

    URGENT - NEW HATCH ABANDONED

...hen. One was discovered already dead, in the coop, we think trying to get to mom? It was cannibalized and we don't know when that happened. **the other hatch hubby discovered at same time JUST out of shell - soaking and of course exhausted. Seeing the other dead one he scooped him up and...

    Australian spotted ducklings

The breed isn't well known but I sure love them. Bantam size - all ours are under 2 lbs. The ones in the pic are all "greenheads". The females have more vivid "spots" and male and female look very similar to mallards or appleyards. I love chicks too but ducklings win the cuteness factor...

'nother ??? too many eggs for a banty - leave or remove?

She ended up sitting on 15 eggs for a bantam duck. Didn't realize there were that many until I candled (being nosy) last night. They don't all look as "normal" as my other duck's eggs. Not like a bloodring but just not quite normal. So, not having the experience I am reluctant to choose what...

Hatching time - no air cell - no pipping

I've searched and found a lot of info, but not quite the question I am after. There were 6 eggs, 3 hatched Monday night. She stayed on the nest as long as she could keep the fuzzballs with her. It's now Wed. pm and no pipping, and at least one of the remaining eggs, if not more, has been left...

Bedding for Duck House? Hay or Shavings?

Shavings on the floor and hay in the nestboxes. The coop used to stink - until I painted it - wall and floor. Shavings on the floor, some DE mixed in - i haven't had to clean it yet. Picked a couple of spots but otherwise just tossed it with the DE. No stink - 4 ducks at the moment. No...

    Advice on controlling duck population

Just collect the eggs that you do find! If you know they are fresh put them in your fridge!! Or you could sell them as hatching eggs if you don't mind the hassle. While predation may thin the herd so to speak, I would still remove eggs so they don't raise too many. Each time the predators...
