Mountain Bird Chicken Farm
I'm a college student at Appalachian State University that raises some chickens up in the mountains. I've got 3 Buff Orps, 3 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 2 Black Australopes, 3 Plymouth Barred Rocks, 7 Red Sex-Links,and 4 White Leghorns. This is the first time I've ever...
No mites - I use DE, which isn't necessarily "good" for young ones but I've never had any problems in the past two years. However, he does get picked on a lot. I know that is just usual behavior but its pretty intense to be this little fella.
Normal behavior! They love to stand off the practice their future pecking order battles. I don't think it points to gender either..(I might be wrong though!). I think all of your chicks will warm up if you handle them enough!
I think this chick is in the batch with my 5.5 wk. olds and it is supposed to be a Golden Laced Wyandotte. What is wrong with he/she? Below is a picture of another bird that's at the same stage (same breed):

What's wrong with me...
Here are two chicks that a broody hen in my hen house hatched about 9.5 weeks ago. One has relatively larger waddles than the other and I'm pretty sure that he is a cockeral. However, the other has smaller waddles and I can't tell. Any guesses?

I bought some pekins and fed them chick starter for the first two months and they seem to be doing well. they just won't get in the baby pool...i thought ducks swam...
Do you want baby chicks or not? I;d recommend pulling her out of the box if you don't want her sitting on the eggs. It won't hurt and she'll probably go broody again soon.
So...the hen that has gone broody, for what I thought was 2 weeks, turns out to have hatched her two eggs I let her have this morning. She's in the laying house with the rest of the flock (7 hens and one roo). Also, she's in a nesting box inside the laying house.
My questions are:
Should I let...
is there any way to tell the sex of 3 week old chicks.
i have buff brahmas, jersey giants, amberlinks, buff orps, and golden laced wyandotte.
I don't really care about vent sexing, just being able to tell what sex they are via feathering, comb/wattle analysis, or other way. I've heard all...
I've got two chicks that are 6 weeks old that have a barred rock as a mother and a white leghorn roo as the father. They have very defined combs and wattles. Here is a picture, if it is too fuzzy I'll post another. What sex do you think they are?
Picked these bad boys up at a friends the other day and he told me that they were Black Jersey Giants...I am beginning to think they are Black Australorps though. All 3 are larger than the rest of the chicks and their feet are starting to yellow a little at the tips of their toes. Here's some...
Actually to rid an area of fireants completely you would have to spray with a very powerfully modified insecticide. It's designed to only rid certain species of ants, including fireants. I'd have to look up the name, but I know such a thing exists because I found an ancient container in a barn...
