    Coop color??

Mine is a turquoise/teal blue with white trim. Still need to plant some flowers around it!

    Affordable automatic coop door, suggestions?

It's my understanding that the company is very small and it is a little hard to contact the owner. But he always tries to fix any issues and I can't imagine they wouldn't honor the warranty. Personally I think it's an installation issue most of the time when people have trouble with these doors...

    Affordable automatic coop door, suggestions?

I have the ador also. We installed it in September and it's been working great since. We recess mounted it like the website explained, supposedly keeps ice from forming as easily. It's worked great and opened and closed every single day without fail. Rain, snow, ice storms...nothing stopped it...

    Rooster damage

I think they have plenty of space. Their coop is 8x12, with an automatic door to let them out every morning to a 12x20 run. The ratio was 1 rooster to the 16 hens. I really didn't want the first rooster let alone a second one! I assumed the feather picking was boredom at first because I noticed...

    Rooster damage

The rooster doesn't have feathered legs. He is a big barred rock rooster. The littlest hens are the ones that look the worst. The big girls look fine. I've actually read good things about the saddles helping feathers grow back. When the feathers start to grow in, they look like little black bugs...

    Rooster damage

Does this look like rooster damage? We have 16 laying hens and 1 accidental rooster. He is well behaved towards us so we have kept him so far, (even though he is LOUD!) But now about 7 of the hens look pretty terrible. They are completely bald on their backs and almost all the way the base of...

    Chickens looking bad after winter?

Yeah, I already did check 2 of the balder looking ones, a lighter one and a darker one and did not see anything.

    Chickens looking bad after winter?

We have had a very cold and snowy winter. My 16 hens have been cooped up most of the time, even though they have access to a run all winter. They just look raggedy and have a general unhealthy appearance. Some have bald looking faces, and some have patches of feathers missing at the bases of...

Pics of your most colorful eggs!!

I have true Ameraucanas, Black Copper Marans, Buff Orps, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, Welsummers and Australorps. These pics don't have my a Marans eggs, which are laying pretty dark now. My Welsummers and Olive Eggers lay some really nice speckled brown and green eggs too.

How do you heat the laying boxes?

It was supposed to be record breaking low temps today. In Warren county we even had delayed openings for schools because of the temps. Today around 9am it was still only -5 F! Still no frozen eggs!

How do you heat the laying boxes?

I can vouch for Ron's method too. I am also in NJ and my eggs were freezing. We haven't built permanent nest boxes yet so we have 2 plastic crates we have been using lined with straw. We already had 2 seedling mats and bought the thermocube at Home Depot. The only thing we haven't done is put...

    Blue Seal or Purina?

It's not as easy to find feed mills in my area as I thought it would be. Every mill I've contacted only sells layer mash. If it were up to me I'd be supporting local mills and farms.

    Blue Seal or Purina?

Ok, so instead of answering my question with another question, you could have started off by saying that. Thats what I assumed, but I was looking for opinions and comments, better company to support, more consistent quality of foods, better ingredients, anything to rationalize buying the more...

    Blue Seal or Purina?

I think it's more about amount of protein and healthy additives versus fillers and possible preservatives or unnecessary ingredients. You try to pick the lesser of two evils.

    Blue Seal or Purina?

You get the 50lb bag for $16? That's great. I can check around, but Tractor Supply seems to be the only local dealer. It seems hard to find in my area.

    Blue Seal or Purina?

We have a surprise rooster in the flock now, so I'm going to be feeding a multi flock with the oyster shell for the hens. The multi flock is so much more than the layer feed! At my local Tractor Supply I have the option of Blue Seal Multi flock for $22.49 or Purina multi flock for $17.49. We...

    Cleaning lots of eggs

Shouldn't you not be giving your chickens raw egg? They get a taste for the raw egg and want to eat the ones they lay.

    Barred rock roo or hen?

Is there anything I can do about the biting? I mean, I can pick him/her up just fine, but every once in a while it just bites at your hand. I don't know if it's just food related as my hens will also peck when they think I have food in my hands too. This one is the only one that has actually...

    Barred rock roo or hen?

I noticed the swooping of the tail feathers too, but I can't recall if my barred rock female had a swoop look to her tail until she fattened up and fluffed out. Technically the 5 were all from Mypetchicken.com and should all be females. I wasn't looking to get any roosters, but I can keep one if...

    Barred rock roo or hen?

These are my first chickrns, so forgive me if it's obvious...but I cannot tell if this 19 week old barred rock is a rooster or a hen. I have a group of 12 hens that are 25 weeks and this one and 4 other "hens" were added a few weeks later and just integrating into the group. They won't even...
