This is just a short story about how I came to own some chickens.
Someone in my office has a flock of chickens. When I moved to a more rural location here in Iowa, I thought perhaps I would be amused by having a chicken or two. One day, when I was idly surfing the internet, I came across...
Hi Lisa!
Eggs arrived today, every single one intact and perfect. Your eggs are a treat to receive! Great job on the packaging too. I can't wait to see how many will hatch. Thank you so very much!

When I was a kid, "fart" was a rude word so we said "windy" in our house, as in "Oh dear, the dog had a windy." Of course, as an adult, I now have difficulty not giggling when somebody says that a person is really long winded or a "wind bag" because I get a completely different picture in my...
We have a greyhound who is the fartingest dog ever. He can really clear the room.
We began to feed him a good scoop of canned pumpkin and a good scoop of plain yogurt on his food. He is no longer the fartingest dog ever. He is still slighty farty, but not near as bad.
I forget where I...
Hi Lisa!
Remember I asked you about eggs about a week ago and you said you would send me an email....? Did you forget? I would still like some frizzle eggs if you have any!
Claire
Mothergoose,
Do you still have any of those black copper chicks? We had some major losses over the holiday and I'm trying to rebuild the flock....
Claire
Lilandra,
This post is on the Des Moines area Craig's List for someone selling a MF rooster in Woodward.

I would like a dozen speckled sussex. I know it's cold to be shipping to Iowa, but we just lost about 2/3 of our flock while we were away for Christmas - I suspect IB but not sure. Our farm help was devastated but nothing he could do. They just kept dropping like flies. I need to rebuild and...
Hi Lisa,
Any chance of more eggs? I am devastated after coming back from my Christmas holiday in Canada. We lost about 2/3 of our flock to (I think) infectious bronchitis. Tremendous losses for us, including all our young birds (which included the frizzles I had from you). I would love to...
My guess is top pick left most bird is a roo. Also 3rd pic of single bird. Hard to tell on some of the others but those 2 I mentioned sure look like roos to me. Possibly 4th pick, right side bird is also a roo.
I don't have pot bellied pigs but I have mini goats (Nigerian dwarf and pygmy goats) and I have loads of chickens, as well as some sheep. I have three female llamas and they get along wonderfully with all the animals. When I got 2 of them, they had only ever been with horses and donkeys. The...
Well, I admit it, I'm a "pot and pan snob" and I adore my set of de Buyer copper pots and pans from France. No non-stick there, but they work a treat and hold the heat beautifully and no hot spots, etc.
For my non-sticks, I use Anolon or Circulon because I work for a subsidiary of DuPont so...
Oh, I didn't want to imply that all spider mites are no problem. The regular type that get on my plants are he*l on earth to get rid of, and they are very tiny - even tinier than the red ones, and white or tan color, and they make little webs all over the plants, often the growing tips. Nasty...
So great to hear about Sadie - I remember reading this story back when it first happened, but didn't realize there was the update - so glad I saw it, and so happy for her!
Great to meet so many BYC folks at the show! I'm so glad I went. I wanted to come home with a few chickens but was kind of disappointed that so many of the birds were in trios and pairs. I didn't really want any more roos.
LovesmyChix - So pleased that your daughter loves the frizzle and...
CherryC - those definitely sound like problem mites (not like the red spider mites). Have you checked your chickens? They tend to infest the area around the vent first. It would be best to get some permethrin dust for your hens. If you look at the base of the feathers around the vent...
My suspicion is that they are simply ordinary red spider mites that are common in gardens everywhere. I get them all over, especially in areas with rocks or bricks. They also tend to check out new structures we build in a hurry! Those are not chicken mites. Have you looked at your chickens...
Thanks OEGBlady.
It is not too bad but I don't want it to get any worse and keep spreading so I just want to nip it in the bud. I just found 1 site that said 4 days for withdrawal from eggs after last dose. I think I'll wait 2 weeks to be extra-sure.
