When I first had chickens with my mom we had a baby turkey who turned out to be a male. He was a better guard dog than our mastiff and ahepherd/Rottweiler and a great family pet but became aggressive after his second year. In the few years we had him we never had issues with predators and he...
I bought a shallow bin to place in the coop, if I as to purchase dirt and sand what is the type to get? I imagine potting soil is unsafe.
And I plan to mix in some ash, DE and maybe pdz?
I've noticed my chickens are dust bathing in the PDZ poop table, with all the poop!! How do people provide them an alternative dust bathing option in the winter or rainy weeks?
I posted in a Facebook group and everyone said a Cochin mix or poorly bred Cochin. But she is such few feathers I find Cochin hard to believe. She has almost no feathering compared to my younger Cochin:
I love her regardless, she is by far the sweetest and friendliest of all the chickens...
Was a freebie and the store was unsure. Her beak has a blueish tint to it. She has some feathering on legs but very minimal. She is the sweetest bird I have and actually begs to be picked up and loves to be pet. She is about 10 weeks old as I picked her up on September 21st.
Thank you. She's only a day old and I don't think she came at or drink on her own. I've been using a syringe to give her water ( with save a chic electrolytes and probiotics) but only putting drops on tip of her beak while supporting her head and letting her drink it on her own. I tried giving...
Got some chicks from my pet chicken today.
One of the wyandottes has her head stuck down to her chest looking at her feet and walks in circles and falls over. Her head is pointed straight down not up at all.
I know a lot say that but I also have had birds in the past get frost bite and everyone is saying this is going to be a hard winter and my chicks are all currently under 6 weeks they will not be full grown adapted adults and I have a couple lighter breeds.
The coop has electric hooked up to it...
I have such a mix I honestly couldn't tell you what that specific one looked like as a smaller chick. Out of these 2 I was thinking one was a buff Orpington and other was New Hampshire red I believe but then thought I had 2 Buffs until I noticed the feathered legs. I'm pretty good with all the...
My mom raised and bred chickens, silkies being her favorite but she passed away in 2012 and I'm starting with chickens again. We had close to 100 hens at one point and I was very involved in the raising and care but I fee like such a newbie!!! This site has been a great help so far!
Great to know!! The person guaranteed they are 100% females but I know that's not likely so trying to figure out all the breeds and keep an eye on feathering. Thanks for knocking that one of my list!! Hoping she stays a girl as they look quite beautiful.
I think you are right!! And the person did say dark brahma so I got confused with another chick. I'm excited I've only had light brahma and the dark seem to have beautiful patterns.
That's what I was thinking. I'll have to study some pics of the different breeds once I figure them all out hahahaha there was some mix ups and some freebies which I don't mind but it's hard figuring out who is what at this age lol they are all 6 weeks and under.
So I have these 2 chicks that were sold as buff Orpingtons. They are the same age but one is much larger and her feathers have come on better. The smaller one is having an awful time with her feathers but also has feathered legs, any guesses on the breed?
The bigger one has blue eyes and the...
