Sheep issues with possible caseous lymphadenitis

Hi, well we lanced the abcess and got all the puss out, it was a greenish yellow and like cheese. We put loads of iodine on it and packed the hole with furacin cream.... The one thing I noticed was a hard lump just aboved the abcess? Not sure if it could be he cause of the abcess?? It's all been...

Sheep issues with possible caseous lymphadenitis

It's something we have considered because I think she does have some trouble with her teeth she's always grinding them and moving her mouth around. The abcess is right where the bottom jaw joins the top and no teeth on the other side but I guess an abcess could develop anywhere along the...

Sheep issues with possible caseous lymphadenitis

Thanks for the reply. I will be going to the vet about the vaccine for the other ewe and lambs and our ram just to be on the safer side. With the older ewe I will try to convince my partner that culling her would be the best action. She has become a pet but I'm worried about the bacteria getting...

Sheep issues with possible caseous lymphadenitis

Hi, I have an oldish ewe about 8/9 years old who has developed an abcess on the side of her jaw. I think it could be CL but what's the best course of action? She's in a paddock with another young ewe and two lambs. I read there is a vaccine, should it be something to consider?? Am considering to...

    Computer Question

Hi, when we had an oldish computer (5yrs old) the hard drive failed and in the end we took it to a computer repair shop and had a new one, they also upgraded the RAM and cost £90.00 they asked which operating system we wanted on it and said XP rather than windows 7. The computer is running fine...

    I née help quick!

Hi, don't panic :-) leave it be I'm sure it will manage. I have had this happen before and chick managed fine. I also feel that helping isn't really helpful. I did it twice and both chicks died after a few weeks, I'm sure they weren't meant to hatch for a reason. Enjoy watching them hatch! Can't...

    Cat with lump

Hey thanks for the replies! I hope it is nothing serious. I will keep an eye on it. He only had two injections one for rabies and the other I think does several things I know the label has FeLv or something like that on it. I don't belive I will do any more vaccines for the fear of VAS which I...

    Cat with lump

Hi, I have a 16 month tabby called Kian. I found a lump in his back. It's under the skin and quite firm but moves around a lot. He recently had his annual shots, so could it be a reaction and when would it go. I was recently reading about VAS (vaccine associated sarcoma) which scared me so much...

How to keep my chickens combs from freezing?

I used vaseline on my too last year and it does seem to help although it didn't get that cold last year maybe minus 10 degrees max but the comb wasn't so blue with it :-)

    chicken food

Hi, chicks can be fed crumble up to 8 weeks then moved onto growers and presuming they are layers, they can go on to layer pellets at around 20 weeks. Chicks will love eggs, worms and vegetable scraps if it's in small bits. Be careful as some vegtables or vegetable parts are poisonous for...

    What age is best?

Not sure what production reds are exactly. But as a guide pure breeds/dual purpose can take longer (around 28/30 weeks old). Certain breeds specific for meat like naked necks can be finished at 18 weeks and the really fast growing like cobbs, sassos is 8 weeks. My hybrid maran cross RIR and...

    Hen with leg problem

Hi, I have had a few hens have the same problem. I don't know how they manage it but they do. My RIR hurt her leg and was limping badly but after a couple of weeks she was walkin normally again. My current one is taking longer but is slowly getting better. I tend to do what you have done...

    What age is best?

Yea I don't do the nasty my OH does but when it's done I do the plucking and gutting which is ok and when you come to eat it you will appreciate it. I hate the fact we kill chickens but love the fact I'm eating home grown chicken, tastes better too :-)

    What age is best?

Yep definately boys! You can also tell by the saddle and neck feathers (these are really thin feathers they get on the neck and on the back by the tail. Give them a good feel to see if you think they have enough meat to process them but they should be good to go. :-)

    But I don't want a cat. pg3-Graphic pics. Pg 1, last update.

Aaaww, what a beautiful kitty! I just wanted to say that I have a cat who is a year old and I do have chickens and chicks. The cat is nearly always outside and has never hurt a chicken or chick (although he has shown interest) so I wanted to put your mind at rest with yours. The cat and chicken...

How often will she lay eggs

Hi, depending on what breed she is but most will lay 5/6 eggs a week taking a days rest. In the winter most stop laying as they gnerally need more than 14 hours sunlight a day to lay. Last year I put a light in the coop to lengthen their day to keep them laying as mine had just started laying...

    What age is best?

Hi, I will try to answer your questions as best I can. I have been breeding chickens for both meat and eggs. You can eat both cockerals and chickens and yes they do get tougher with age. I have eaten chickens at 6 months and they weren't too tough. Ideally a chicken should be eaten before 30...

Which breed of chicken is at the top of your flock (pecking order)

What are your special "rituals" when you process chickens?

Usually I don't do anything but my last lot of butchering included my beautiful maran cockeral as I replaced him with another meatier bird (Sussex) I hugged and wept a tear or two as he was a really good roo who looked after the flock. I don't eat chicken on processing day either but it still...
