    a WWYD winter in CA

I just covered the roof part so there is no gusts coming in, and it should take the edge off the chill. They snuggle so I think that's all I will need to do. I covered it with a layer of towels and a tarp.

    a WWYD winter in CA

Cold weather is coming here...but not cold like in the east. Supposedly will get down around 35-40 at night around here. This morning I had to scrape a little ice off the car. Our five chickens are in a garden coop where the henhouse is covered by the roof and some hardware cloth. All around is...

What is the best way to deal with aggression?

oh, and also, you might try more protein. When i switched from flockraiser to layena they started the aggression. When I switched back and gave them flockraiser again (20% protein vs 16% in layena), with oyster shell, they went back to sane chickens again.

What is the best way to deal with aggression?

You can try pinless peepers at eggcartons.com. Solved my pecking problem, along with freeranging them every day. Since then no pecking, hardly any tiffs, and they lay an egg each a day. Just a word of warning, however, eggcartons.com charges over 3 times what everyone else charges for the pliers...

How do you install pinless peepers? (x-posted)

THey are these blinders to put on the chickesn so they can't see to peck each other, but they can see up and down. I got two on...but pinched the skin on two others, one I had to take off because she was bleeding, and the other one it fell off! I thought i got it right. am I the only one who...

How do you install pinless peepers? (x-posted)

I have the peepers, pliers, but no directions...I know you're supposed to soak them in hot water or something, and then they'll come apart easier? Pliers don't seem to separate the prongs too well...am I over-thinking?

How the heck do you install pinless peepers?

I got them, with the snap ring pliers, but there are no directions at all! And it's not really intuitive, since the snap ring pliers don't seem to be what I thought they were. Unless I am looking at them wrong, they don't really open up the peepers, at least not that much. Is it different when...

Really need some help, at the end of my rope--get rid of bully?

Thanks, I totally forgot about the peepers. I just ordered some. I hope they work, because the pine tar isn't really working very well. I switched their food back and isolated the bully so hopefully everything together will amount to better behavior on everyone's part!

Really need some help, at the end of my rope--get rid of bully?

Thanks everyone. I've got her and the injured one in isolation (not together though!!), so I'll see if Dolley can get better and put her back before Jackie. Then hopefully Jackie's "time-out" will cool her feathers a bit. I think my husband will prefer to give her away than build on to the coop...

Please help, don't know if I need to get rid of this bully chicken

She's an astralorp, almost 26 weeks old, just started laying a couple of weeks ago. No free ranging (hawks and stray cats), 50sf run space with five birds, coop is a bit on the snug side (about 15sf), but they are hardly ever in there except to lay and sleep at night. I just started feeding them...

Really need some help, at the end of my rope--get rid of bully?

Coop is a bit on the snug side but they never go in there during the day. The run is 50sf and I have 5 chickens, so that's 10sf per bird as I read on here is a good ratio. maybe with the water and food bins though it's less. I have a feeling jackie is going to need to go I can't keep doing this...

Please help, don't know if I need to get rid of this bully chicken

Jackie is causing injury by pecking, and she's just such a huge bully. Should I get rid of her? I've tried everything--cabbage, pine tar on the victim's butts, extra protein, etc. She just won't quit it. I isolated her and she's going crazy in her little pen right now by herself. But I can't...

Really need some help, at the end of my rope--get rid of bully?

I have one chicken who is at the top of the pecking order, Jackie. Well, Jackie pecked a gaping hole in Dolley, the bottom chicken. I iosolated Dolley, she healed. Then while she was gone, Jackie pecked Rosalyn to the point of bleeding. So I took Ros out too. They all healed and went back in...

Did you notice an eggshell change when switching to Layena?

Ya know what, come to think of it, a lot of problems have happened since I switched. Lots of behavior issues, pecking, etc. I wonder if it's connected at all.

Cabbage Affect Flavor Of Eggs ??

darnit. that's the only thing that seems to keep them busy enough not to peck at each other during the day--I figured a cabbage a day, no problem. I guess we'll find out!!!

Did you notice an eggshell change when switching to Layena?

I recently (like 2 weeks ago) switched to Layena from flockraiser+oyster shell and my girls' eggs have been a bit funky. One chicken started laying about a week ago and hers seem the same but another of my chickens have had drastic color changes and speckles, etc. By drastic I mean used to be...
