Cool. Having just gotten into pigeons... I'd like to go to a show like this. Gonna have to checkout my corner of the country and see if anything like that is coming up.
Cheers!
I'll second what 'Av8torcrj' said. It's a lost egg. Don't fret too much about it. They'll lay more... and eventually in the proper spot.
I too just bought pigeons recently. I'd been studying rearing them for a little while, but the actual purchase came sooner than expected (CL deal). I...
Should be just fine. Adjust the lamp height based on how the chicks react. All piled on top of each other directly under the light... too cold... lower the lamp. Spread out to the far corners of the brooder away from the light... too hot... raise the lamp.
I have 8 chicks in a 5ft x 5ft...
Room temperature works well for my FF. I've been doing the continual batch method... take some out... put some new in... add water as needed... stir... repeat. I'm amazed at how easy it is. And like others said... it swells the food to be more than you put in originally... so seems like it...
Thanks! They are very lovely. Honestly... not sure what I'm doing with these.
My original interest in pigeons was for the purpose of the utility breeds. I liked the idea of a fairly low maintenance, sustainable flock that would raise their own young for me.
That said... these aren't...
Guess I can join the ranks of pigeon keepers.
Found these beauties... domestic Pheasant Pigeons. They were pretty far away from me (2.5hrs)... but I couldn't resist. They are very attractive birds.
I got 2 mated pairs... an extra hen and a fledgling I'm currently weaning.
I'm excited to...
Last evening I went by our local Big-R store (similar to Tractor Supply Co.) and saw 50# bags of Fancier Pigeon feed (14% protein, etc.)... for $30. That's twice the cost of a similar bag of chicken feed. Guess it's a good thing they're smaller and eat less!
Curtiejlee... do you breed them...
So the larger King pigeon breed will still free fly... if given the choice? I was under the impression the larger utility breed pigeons didn't have much of a desire for flying. Or are at least content with just some outdoor aviary space.
I live near a lake, so lots of hawks and eagles. I'm...
I would love to know more about raising pigeons. That old 'Texas Pioneer utility pigeon' thread was great.
Pictures would be very appreciated.
What does your coop look like? Do you have a fly area with your coop?
How did you get started? Any good books/resources you can recommend? (not...
Got Thermal Mass?
Thermal mass is a heat sink. It equalizes to the temperature around it. But based on how much mass there is, this equalizing (change of temperature) can happen much slower than the surrounding environment.
Lots of different stuff can function as thermal mass: rocks, bricks...
...trademarked name from Dow) has an R-value of 3.5 per inch. That is probably why many of the commercial small incubators are made out of Styrofoam.
** update after first hatch ** I can see why people like the plastic namebrand incubators for their ease of cleaning. After my first hatch I can...
...litters now! The oldest litter of 8... is now 12 days old... eyes open... and I had my first kit jump out of the nestbox this morning. So cute! (**must not get attached!***) The second litter of 9... is only 3 days old. All seem to be doing well. My does are seasoned mommas so that is a...
And you can keep the buns your raising with their momma for the full 8 weeks (preferably with a larger cage) while they wean and then it's off to freezer camp.
I have two current litters. #1 is 12 days old and has 8 kits. #2 is 2 days old and has 9 kits.
Cheers!
Thanks for the tutorial Jamie! Glad it went well for you.
Sorry about your breeding stock. Hope your new breeders perform better.
My first litter is 10 days old today... all 8 are doing great... good momma doe.
My other doe is due today. She is in full nesting mode. We'll see how her...
You went from 6 hens to over 200 chickens in 10 months?!? That some serious exponential chicken math!
I like the idea of your DP grow-out trial. I hope your birds get to a good age/size before they start crowing.
1 of my 2 roosters growing with my hens... just found his "voice" this...
I started my broiler chicks using one of those red trough feeders with all the head holes in it. That was fine for 2-3 weeks until I saw them getting their heads stuck in it! haha.
So I cut-out the webbing between every other hole on that feeder (enlarging the holes) and that was fine for...
Mid-May bump! How's everyone's Spring going?
My layers (plus short-term roos... one of which just found his "voice" this morning) got the whole retiring to the hen house and roost bar thing figured out. Pretty cool.
I've been moving their coop every 3 days or so. It's HEAVY... but I manage...
