At 4 a.m., one of my chicks hatched. This afternoon, I'm watching another one hatch with giddy glee. I'm video'ing the whole thing on my phone. I see the one who hatched last night pick off something of the newly hatched. I watched in horror as she started to choke. I've been told not to...
No. EEK! I haven't read the candling one. Would that show if they started the process and then quit? I'm actually scared to touch the eggs because I wanted them to settle a bit before I set them in the incubator in the morning. I was told by friends to wait 36 hours before starting it. Is...
Thanks to both of you!! I've been trying to see what I should be looking for when I candle them, but I can't find anything about that for day one. I'm going to tylan dip them in the morning and start them up. First time with incubator so I'm very nervous!
Hi! I received my eggs yesterday but USPS didn't call me to come pick them up. Instead they were on the small truck all day (until after four p.m.). I talked to the mail lady and she said the temps were over 100 in the truck. The eggs arrived in good shape (i.e. not broken) I just don't know...
Thank you Barbara. Such a kind response from someone who has lived through this. The vet highly recommended breeding for resistance and not to buy or bring in anymore new birds. So.. I guess for now we just wait. The cochin bantams are spunky and lively.. such little dolls. The silkies.. one...
Hi hi! In the past week, I have lost three growouts. They were 10 weeks old. The necropsy revealed they died of Mareks disease, one had 2-8mm lesions all inside her. They were all mottled houdans. I still have a polish and 4 silkies that were the same age mixed with some cochin bantams that...
Hi! So my flock had a bad case of IB last fall. Many survived, but symptoms reoccur with stress. I've been using deep litter in the coop. I turn the pine shavings every day and add in some to the top a few times a week. I've been reading about sand lately and was wondering if that might be...
In the interest of science, my package had 22 tablespoons in it as well. Mine is the top picture. They still don't put how many tsp. to gallons of water on the package.. just 400-800 mg.
All chickens have personalities, some more than others. I like it when I'm looking at them and their name just comes to me. Bunny, my little while silkie hen, got named the day she hopped around the brooder. Sometimes I use a "theme" for those being raised together. One batch had the last...
One week ago, I bought day old red frizzle chicks. Two of them have crazy frizzle feathers. The other four.. not so much. I've read that it can take two weeks for their feathers to frizzle out. Spent the past 24 hours just watching the feathers.. hoping... Any chance the others might...
I have a white crested black frizzle polish bantam that has been mated with my splash silkie roo. I'm going to try to breed them out too. Will posted update in the next couple of months. I would love a poofy headed silkie.
Hi! Got some new baby chicks from the local feed store. They were listed as "assorted polish" from Welp Hatchery. I think they are white crested black or blue. I've watched videos of blue polish and they look black when they are first born. Is there a way to tell at week two if they will be...
Bought 7 chicks on Thursday. At first they were cute and shy... then they started being more aggressive with each other. I just kind of left them alone for the evening. Came back to find them asleep. One was laying by herself. She's seemed to be the shy one from the start. When she stands...
I have one that is almost a year old. She's a little toot. I think I spoiled her a little too much with the hand feeding and now demands it (even when I see her eating just fine out of the normal bowls!!). I've tried different things. If she looks like she's lost some weight, I'll mix up her...
Can you cancel the order? Many feed stores have these already set up so you can go look at them. I wouldn't put more than 2-3 birds. The hens will peck each other and will be more prone to disease.
A shed with some nesting boxes added would work better. Have you checked craigslist for coops...
So... perhaps it was just wishful thinking that we were turning a corner. I posted on another thread a few days ago that Claire passed away. At the time I had two sneezing, but weren't losing weight. Now.. almost the whole flock is sneezing and wheezing. I know the vet said the symptoms come...
Ahh so it is still seeing the chromosomes. I was thinking that it was a pattern. It would seem like the possibility would exist that a pattern might be there. It'd be interesting to see the same candleling of girls and boys at the same distance with the same light. If it was put into a...
Thank you Barbara. I don't think I am to the stage where I could preform a necropsy on the chicken. She is frozen at the moment. I want to save some feathers and make feet prints in clay before burial.
My birds have had confirmed IB. I do not know why 3 weeks ago it decided to finally hit...
