Eggcentric, YOur chick looks exactly like my little black hen. If it was a roo, I think it would be crowing. Give her time, she will probably become broody soon enough and then you won't be able to get her off a nest. I wonder if she would sit on a decoy egg?

That is very impressive ! What about anesthesia? Wasn't she in pain?
I am concerned that my two silkie hens have very large crops. My oldest hen acts like she is starved. when I throw out food she just runs like crazy to it. I noticed her pecking bits of styrofoam off of an insulated piece...
thanks so much dhlunicorn for the info and the really great link. I don't know if she has crook nick or not. Right now she will jerk her neck several times to the right several times like a nervous tic then shake her head.
I feed them a mixture of cracked corn, oats, and there is a white...
Last week I noticed my silkie chick about 4 mos old was jerking it's neck to the right and shaking it's head. It is eating and seems healthy other wise. but this morning I noticed that the hen is starting to shake her head too. Could this be some sort of parasite?

I have an english angora as a house pet. She is wonderful. I keep her trimmed very close, especially in the summer except for her ears and tail. she is adorable like that. Looks like she is going to lift off with those ears. I got mine from a breeder but she is no longer raising Angora's...
Hi Arlee, I wondered if it maybe normal, but I can't remember by first chicks having such a large lump under their neck. Gee, I hope I didn't do anything to hurt her. she seemed fine and I only massaged her a few minutes very gently. It seemed to be softer and somewhat smaller afterwards. I...
Hi everyone,
My silkie FINALLY hatched one healthy chick after several failures. But I noticed yesterday that it had this lump on it's chest that seemed to be getting larger. Ignorant soul that I am, I just knew I had a peep with a tumor, but my friend told me it was it's crop.
I was...
I agree Elderoo. Silkies aren't good for much other than pets. I get a few eggs from mine when she isn't brooding. Looks like I'll be getting eggs about 4 weeks a year. Ha -ha. But I really don't mind. I just keep mine for the fun of it. If I needed them for food I'd have some RIR or...
I was hoping someone could give me a little guidance. My silkie is setting on a clutch of eggs I ordered for her. this is only week two but one of them hatched this morning. Since she is still setting I brought it inside. It's been a while since i had day old chicks. It isn't standing yet...
I fell in love with silkies the first time I saw them. I thought they were so adorable. Mine don't have naked necks. the hen doesn't have a bige top knot though so she sees fine. The rooster seems to see better out of one eye because his comb flops to one side. I hav trimmed the feathers...
I am heartbroken for you and your daughter. I can't imagine the pain of carrying a child almost to term and losing it. There is a reason but we can't understand. She is God's and I pray He will bring complete healing soon. You are in my prayers.

Wow, I never thought about ordering eggs from ebay. I just ordered eggs from Meyers for the first time and they were really wrapped and padded well shipped priority mail and the shipping was free.
So do many here ship fertile eggs? that is a good idea, because I wanted silkies but the...
I just ordered some fertile eggs for my silkie. If by some miracle some of them should hatch, I was thinking about taking them for a few days so they could be more tame. My silkies are easy to round up, but the chicks she raised back in the spring are a real pain to get in the coop if I have...
I posted about a month ago that some feral varmint killed my three Patagonian Cavies. So far I haven't had any luck catching the killer. didn't think I would. But we have put fencing around the shelter and I am supposed to get two new Cavies Saturday. If they are tame enough to put up at...
My little silkie haas had no luck hatching her own brood. I ordered chicks back in the spring. She has set twice since and the last clutch produced one little splay legged hatchling. It didn't make it. So she has been setting a week and I decided to order eggs this time. Someone here gave me...
Sounds llike your chicks get plenty of food. If they have access to food at all times they should be well fed. I don't see mine eat a lot , especially the Roo, but they don't look hungry so I reckon they eat. I leave food out and give mine treats several times a day and they free range some. I...
I am so sorry and hope your birds are doing better. I know what you are feeling. A dog or coyote killed all three of my Patagonian Cavies two weeks ago and if I could get it in my sights it wouldn't draw another breath. I love animals too, but when one hurts mine, I have very little mercy ...
