    Creative Coop Names

We have finished the coop and are actively working on the run. We are calling ours the "Feather Fortress" due to the fact that I am over-engineering and over-building it since we have a LOT of predators here on the ranch! It is a fortress for sure!

Thanks for all the welcomes everyone! And thanks for the quick advice regarding heat. I built my coop in the shade and the run will be fully shaded as well. I plan to put ice in the water and will offer a wading pool when the real heat hits. I just keep reading that chickens can tolerate...

2nd night with chickens and the predators gather!!

Sound great David! I agree. It took extra time and $ for my hubby and I to build this monster coop. Hardware clothe is expensive and "sandwiching" it between boards with screws felt like we were building it twice (which essentially we were!). But I think in the end it will be worth the...

Raccoon/cat Mad at myself and heart broken!

Well it's as if your word were prophetic! We were awoken to the dogs going NUTS and sure enough they had chased a raccoon from the coop area and "treed" him up under the rafter of a nearby porch! Second night with the chicks outside and those darn predators are gathering already! I see from...

Is anti-freeze soaked meat too mean of a way to kill?

I am so sorry for the loss of your flock. That must have been horrible! I'm with the others. Where those predators came from (no matter what kind they were) there are more, and behind those even more. It's a loosing battle to try to eliminate predators when you live in the country. Your...

2nd night with chickens and the predators gather!!

I expected it but not so fast! Since we live in the country, I knew we had predators. But on night two we awoke to the dogs going NUTS and found they had chased a raccoon up into a hiding place beneath the roof of a porch just a few feet from our brand new chicken coop. We haven't seen a...

    Texas

Hello folks! Just introducing myself....I'm a brand new chicken mom here in Central Texas smack dab in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the "Texas triangle" (formed by Dallas, Houston, San Antonio). Got my girls (after five years of dreaming!) a few weeks ago and they moved into their...

Raccoon/cat Mad at myself and heart broken!

Just catching up after being off line for a while and read this thread. It's like a novel! I'm so glad to see she is doing well!! My biggest fear is predators since I live way out in the country. I'm hoping my "Feather Fortress" (the coop built to withstand a grizzly bear attack even...

    Best coop decor?

Since you are in Texas you're in Bucee's territory. They have the neatest weather vanes and you can pick your animal for the top. They have a chicken one! Check it out on one of your road trips.

The Feather Fortress is habitable! (A love note!)

We didn't finish as far as adding all the pretty siding and such but our very rustic looking "Feather Fortress" is habitable and the chicks have been moved in. Our coop name comes from the questions at the lumbar yard about the supplies we were buying. They asked, "What are you building, a...

Play sand, construction sand, natural sand, etc. So confused!!

Thanks to all for the wonderful responses. Yes, I have access to free natural sand that has no chemicals or pesticides because it is on my own land in a very remote area with nearest neighbors miles away. I did gather a lot of it and put it in the coop and then, thanks to the forums here...

Play sand, construction sand, natural sand, etc. So confused!!

Hi all! I have a question. I understand that if I were to go to my home improvement store that "washed construction sand" is preferred over "play sand". But here's my question...My ranch in Central Texas was, once upon a time many eons ago, the beach of the Gulf of Mexico and is therefore has...

    I finally did it!

After literally YEARS of lurking on chicken sites and talking to everyone who would listen about chickens and buying a house in the country and sketching coops and so on and so on....I finally brought home chicks! I have taken the plunge and so it begins! Wish me luck all you chicken lovers...

    I have this crazy idea.....

Mikeschicks, I know you are just kidding around. But finding the fur of my missing kittens in coyote scat near the house just makes me think about how these pets had been torn limb from limb in a painful death. While I know you are just having fun, it really was heartbreaking for me...

    I have this crazy idea.....

Great idea about an electrical fence but unfortunately it's impractical in my situation. We live deep in the woods and the coyotes come from 360 degrees. We have a barbed wire fence around the house and barn and out buildings to keep the cattle out but it is a perimeter around a full five acres...

    I have this crazy idea.....

Yes, I wished I had a 22 at the time. I had one on the ranch for a long time but the friend who kept it here was so stingy as to "borrow it back" LOL!. How dare he huh? I did go out and fire a 45 from my Judge out at the coyote. I knew I wouldn't hit him at the distance he was away but...

    I have this crazy idea.....

So my idea is kind of crazy so I wasn't even quite sure where to post my question....so here it is. Over the years, feral cats have arrived on the ranch and had kittens and then the mamas have disappeared. So I have ended up raising the kittens and have fallen in love with all of them along the...
