There is no way it is anyone else's egg. We only have one bantam and those are the only eggs she sat on. I am guessing that this must be the daddy coming out in the chick. UNLESS we end up with the two yellow being one gender and the black being another. Then it seems like it almost has to be a...
We are so excited for our sweet banty hen to hatch chicks overnight last night. Question is...Why is one black? I know for a fact they are all her eggs and only one possible rooster. Could they be sexed because of the breed mix? Mama is a bantam red cochin and daddy I am not sure about. Here is...
She is in a dog crate, inside the 8x8 chicken coop...should I leave the dog crate door open a bit so she can come out if she needs to? The other chickens pretty much only come in to lay throughout the day. Or, is she ok to be caged in for a while? What do you do about mama going potty? Does she...
ALSO- Once the chicks are all hatched, what should I do about letting her out to go potty? Leave the cage open partially? Or will the babies get out? I want to be the best chicken mama I can be, but this basic stuff just isn't written down anywhere I can find..
I am SOOO new to chickens and especially to broody hens hatching. So, we just had our first chick hatch sometimes in the last 12 hours. Mama is in the coop, in a wire dog crate and it is pretty cool out. High 50ish and low 27. I have a heavy blanket over her cage. Will this be enough? I do...
Ok, again, thanks for your help. She is actually in the floor of our coop, none of my girls will lay in the nest boxes, they all lay in one corner or another. One actually layed on the front porch today! I will work with the hubby to get a separate area made up for her. I think when I move...
Thanks for the replies! So, do you think I should give her different eggs tomorrow? All at the same time? I don't want anything to go wrong for sure, and that site you posted said to NEVER add eggs...
I have a cochin banty that has gone broody. At first, I had planned to NOT let her hatch, so I took her eggs the first couple of days, then we decided to go ahead and let her be, so I put one egg under her yesterday and two today. Will someone give me the rundown of what to do and what to...
I don't think there is necessarily a breed that won't fly. You could clip their wings to keep them from flying out, or cover the top of their pen with chicken wire or bird netting. I believe cornish crosses are strictly meat chickens raised to butcher.
Thank you flockwatcher! We were quite confused to get a large egg yesterday and then a small one today! Regardless of size though, it is SOOO exciting to be getting eggs! I wrote on facebook, that I was as proud of my chickens as I was of my kids when they took their first steps! LOL
Wednesday evening I found my NHR in the coop laying in the corner. When I went to her, she stood up and there was a cold egg under her breast and she stood up farther and a VERY fresh, hot sticky egg under her. I assume she had layed one Tuesday ( her first) and then one Wednesday. Nothing...
We found maggots just this week under the waterer. It sits on a tray, on blocks, about a foot off the floor of the coop. I assume the chickens have been eating them, but I don't know for sure. I don't really know where they are coming from. Do you guys have suggestions of how to get rid of...
Our young rooster bit my daughter (11 years old) last week. She was SO mad she chased him around the yard screaming at him! LOL He just so happened to run into a pen that we have, and she shut him in there. I felt bad she got bit, but it was SO funny the way she reacted. He has never even...
I currently have 3 chickens, a barred rock roo, a rir hen and a cochin banty. They are about 15 weeks old. I am buying 4 hens about the same age from a friend. I do not plan to quarantine them, one because it would be quite difficult and 2, I know that her birds are healthy and well taken...
We added another water source, at the edge of the woods where they like to hang out and have been adding ice to it every so often. Right now it is 98.6 degrees with a heat index of 103! I am trying to figure out a good way to cool their coop a bit in the evening. It is too big for frozen water...
