I did end up giving it a try with my Gold Laced Hen, and it's been a few weeks now, and she accepted all the chicks and they are all happy and healthy, growing like little weeds.
I have a question about this: Does the broody hen have to be broody for about 3 weeks before you put the chicks under her? I have a hen that just went broody about a week ago, and I've got some chicks hatching in the incubator now.
Would it be safe to put the chicks under her, or is the timing...
One of my Black Copper Marans roosters (a year or so old) has just started making noises that sound like a turkey gobble.
He's healthy and fertile, but I've never heard a rooster make a noise like this before. I've been around chickens all my life, 50+ years, and this is the oddest sound I've...
Do true Ameraucanas lay only blue eggs or can they lay cream colors?
I was sold bantam eggs that were cream colored, and got a vairety of lavender, black and (I think) blue chicks. I was told that they were supposed to be true Ameraucana bantams, but I thought true Ameraucanas laid only blue...
I've got a couple of gold laced Orpington hens, one is 6 months old, and the other is 7 months old. Neither one has started to lay yet. Is this normal for the breed?
I've been looking at the ready made chicken tractors, and a lot of them are not very sturdy and don't look like they will last long.
Does anyone out there know of one around $500 (or less) that they would recommend as being a nice, sturdy one for a few chickens?
I know building my own would be...
I have a question related to this:
I have a flock of Lavender Orpingtons, and acquired one beautiful blue bird. What happens if you cross a blue to a lavender?
The sloping towards the outside wall is a great idea, because it would easily direct it outside.
In my case, however, sloping toward the outside wall of the coop wouldn't work because it's a six inch insulated wall because of our winter climates. I love the idea for a summer coop, though.
I...
Has anyone ever installed a dropping shield under their roosts to stop the droppings from falling to the floor directly below the top roost?
I'd like to use some of the space under it but I need something to direct the droppings closer to the front, lower roosts, and not directly under the top...
I have a young Orp that is "gaping" but won't eat. I've been giving it doses of Avitrol Plus, for a couple of days now, and it doesn't seem to be helping.
I have Flubenvet, but the bird won't take it on a grape and I can't jam the powder down it's throat.
Has anyone mixed a paste with a bit...
Well, I contacted the lady, and sent her a pic, and you all were right! It's a little barred rock pullet!
The lady was very apologetic, and is going to send me replacments to make up for the mistake and bad hatch.
I know I must sound kinda stupid, but I've never had barred rock chicks, and...
Thank you I guess it's the chance we take though. Maybe I can find an answer from the seller.
I hope it's not just a barred rock although the general consensus seems to be that's what it is.
I know it's not a cuckoo marans, because the egg was more the color of an orpington egg.
It was born on May 27th, so it would be getting close to 8 weeks old.
Then I got taken when I ordered my eggs. I was told they were orpingtons. They were supposed to be blue/ black or splash.
I am in Canada, but the eggs were supposed to have been from UK imported birds
