Color Question about breeding Orpingtons

I skimmed thru the thread & am wondering what I will get breeding lavendar orp roo to buff orp hens. All new to me! thanks, Trish

Basically, a mess. The color genes that create buff are so different from what creates lavender that you'll likely get chicks with buff heads and another color on the body.

I was told or read somewhere that the lavender turns the "gold" gene to a straw color. I think that buff red and gold are all in the gold group ( I'm not really a genetics expert), and I can't really testify to that (turn the color) as I don't have any lavenders in anything. I had a pair of lavender ameraucana's but lost them.

Lavender is based on Black. I am no genetic expert but I do know that the lavender gene mutes the black in a similar way that the gene for blue does, only in a blue, there is black lacing on the feather. A lavender should not have a gold gene.

But buffs of course do. And I can see how lavender would alter the gold in a buff but since when breeding a black to a buff you end up with birds that have buff or gold looking heads and necks and sometimes penciling, it would follow that a similar thing should happen when breeding a buff to a lavender.

Thanks! I am debating keeping the lavendar orp or selling him to a friend whose son wants to breed him. I am interested in seeing some of these ranch mix chicks from breeding purebreds and prepared to keep the offspring so thought I would see what could potentially happen before i make my decision on keeping or selling him. He is a looker already at 5 mos. so having a hard time thinking of parting with him.
