    Illness, anti-biotics and eggs....

Hi everyone! I have had my first bio-emergency. Two sick chickens...coincidentally it's just my EE's. I isolated them in my chicken hospital and their symptoms are stinky (uric smelling) white diarrhea with a little yellowish stain, listless, loss of weight, pale comb, standing hunched with...

    Does anybody hang the waterer?

Quote: Thanks Lea, so you just hang it by the handle? I'm getting quite an education.I had to google TSC ! then went DUH! Yep...hang it by the handle. There's a little notch at the top to keep it in place. I don't ever have poo in the water and they don't try to perch on it but they still...

    cracked corn and mix grains

Same here...they get a cup of scratch (cracked corn, milo, wheat and BOSS) in the morning and one in the afternoon....not to mention they get kale and yogurt a couple of times a week. I threw in a little bit of cooked trout (caught too many to eat last week) a few days ago and they loved it!

OK ... lets have an EGG COUNT

3 so far this morning. The girls lay all day long and I get 6 to 8 eggs every day. Even my EE's lay everyday. I hear an omelet calling my name.

    Who laid this egg?

Is the egg a pinkish color? Because EE's can lay pink eggs also.

Californians Do Heat or Do Not Heat Coops.....question added

Hi there....boy, has it been cold! Yes...I've been using a 150 watt red bulb at night in the coop. Just enough heat to keep the chill off in the coop. And the windows get shut at dusk. We live in the foothills on the way to Yosemite and have had a bit of snow this week. I've read that they...

    Excessive eating and cold temps?

Okay...good...I'm not the only one. And now that I think about it, mine haven't been scratching around in the run very much...they've been spending a lot of day time in the coop. That makes sense. That is a kooky avavtar...but I love it. Did you see the vampire teeth binky's around...

    Excessive eating and cold temps?

Goodmorning....I'm a bit stumped this morning. Went out to check on the girls and I noticed they have eaten almost all of their feed in two days. Normally, it lasts 5-6 days. So my question is, will chickens consume a lot more food when the temps drop? That is the only explanation I can come...

What do you put in your water

*L*A*G* : apple cider vinegar??? what does that do? ACV slightly elevates a chickens pH and diseases do not like acidic environments. I use Bragg organic ACV, you can get it at the grocery store. Make sure it's in a plastic waterer though. My girls have no vaccinations and never received any...

My poor girls w/o food, water or shelter in 20-degree temps!

Quote: Shhh... don't tell anyone how great the PNW is! We can't take any more transplants - the traffic is bad enough!! Naww, MN is way nicer! Don't you want -40 windchill and a high of negative one, coupled with stinging snow? C'mon, you know you want it... Sure.....MN sounds great...

    Wolf stalking my pens.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. We have mountain lions, bobcats, some other kind of cat, coyotes, raccoons, possums, eagles, hawks, owls, and bears. And I have yet to have one try and get to the chickens. The coyotes actually run past our bedroom window on most nights. Needless to...

    Organic feed vs traditional

I buy organic feed and scratch straight from the mill (Modesto Milling Co.). I pay $24.00 for a 50 lb. bag. I know they ship feed also but I'm not sure of the cost.

    fencing/coop questions

Hi there.....our run is completely enclosed and attached to the coop. The run is 18 feet by 6 feet and about 3 1/2 feet high. It's not as tall as some enclosures but the chickens don't seem to mind. My hubby built it with 2"X4"'s and hardware cloth (much safer than chicken wire). The top of...

THE RUN -- DEEP LITTER OR NOT???

Hi there.....here's what I do. In the coop (8'X8') I use pine shavings (and I use DE, keeps the odor down and dries things out). I remove about 1/2 of the shavings every couple of months and replace with new stuff. Definitely look into whether or not DE is right for you. Then in the run...
