I can look for some cheese cloth or gauze/muslin. Will that allow enough airflow? I don't want to kill my ferment!
That feeder sounds awesome! Could you post pictures when you get a chance? I'm about to switch my chicks over to fermented because I am tired of the waste. Is it safe for chicks...
Is it possible for a chick from a blue cochin pen (blue rooster and blue hens) to have red in its wing feathers? One of my week old blue cochin chicks has wing feathers that are half blue and half reddish-gold. I know that the hens were not bred by any other rooster, so it had to come from one...
I know. It was one of my only 2 that had the right color, and it was a hen! But I have the huge possum that killed it in a trap waiting for me to deal with when I get home :D there will be vengeance for my baby birdie!
The good news: so far I have only pulled 3 infertiles! That brings my total to 69 still going.
The bad news: I lost one of my color project birds last night :( thankfully I have 7 eggs developing normally from that pen, but it still stinks to lose one.
UPDATE: I worked her a couple days ago and today her comb is more red instead of a pale pink! I still haven't seen her eat, but she is drinking lots of water. I'll repeat the worming in 5 days and then a third time according to the instructions. So far she hasn't died, which is good
That's what I was afraid of The only avian vet in my area has a $100 fee that has to be paid upfront before she will see you, and I do not have that much money to spend on a chicken. I will look into getting a different wormer and try that, but otherwise all I can do is make her comfortable.
They are so pretty! I'm super excited to have some. They will also add frame to some of my lighter hens for better dual purpose birds when I hatch from my flock. I've got tons of EE cross hens and one of my roosters is a polish. I need more frame so the extra roos are larger at slaughter!
There is also no evidence of internal parasites. But a worm infestation makes sense. I have Strongid at my house for my dogs, so I may dose her with that this afternoon.
Crop is empty. Her breast bone can easily be felt and seen. I do not think the other chickens would keep her from eating or drinking. We have multiple feeding and watering sites and they free range during the day. She is isolated, but I haven't gotten a chance to observe her poops. I have class...
Hello all.
I have a Brahma pullet who is having some trouble. She has a super pale comb and has lost tons of weight. She is 6 months old and this started this week.
I have checked her all over and cannot find a cause! No mites, no respiratory issues, no fowl pox, no crop issues, not eggbound...
I will be picking up 48 eggs on Saturday, and by then I will have a full 24 bantam eggs! This will be my largest hatch yet
One of the ladies I am getting eggs from has barnevelders, spitzhaubens, large fowl cochins, and brahmas! I am excited to add some new breeds to my flock.
Does the sun mess with blue feathers? My blue cochin rooster has a reddish tint to most of his hackle. I read that the sun can cause brassiness in white birds that carry red or buff but I could not find any information as to whether it does the same to blue feathers. You can see a little red...
