Well, the crows can't get to my eggs and since they don't mess with my chickens and they do chase away hawks I will take them over hawks any day of the week. I have lost 4 chickens to hawks in 2 yr period. I hate hawks. I don't care what good they do. The bad they inflict is not a trade off for me.
We have an abundance of crows this year and they are giving the hawks a run for the money. The martins are doing their part too. The crows eat the baby bluejay and mocking birds out of their nests which I hate. But, while they are around the hawks are getting chased away which I love. I think...
I have given her oyster shell out the wazoo. I would be willing for anyone to have her as a pet that would want her. I just have too many to feed without production.
I have a hen that is about 18mos old or more. She layed just fine until 3mos ago she started laying eggs without shells. Of course she ate them. Since then I have increased her calcium a lot. Now she lays about 1 egg a week with a shell and the rest with no shell. I can tell b/c the nest has a...
This is so funny. I had just had to post. My husband shot a squirrel a few days ago b/c it was getting in my garden. The girls ran over with evil looks on their faces. My hubby p/k it up and threw it away. Now I think we should have let them it.
I just started my 6 new babies on yogurt. I took raw oatmeal and crushed it up and dropped it from one hand to the other hand. They ran up out of curiosity and pecked it. WOW it is food they gobbled it up and then I did the same thing on top of the yogurt. Just sift it btwn your fingers as you...
I have the same thing going on right now. I have some 2 1/2 wk old chicks and some 2yr old hens. What I have done in the past is put the chicks in a cage outside while the big girls are free ranging. They come around them for awhile and then lose interest. I keep doing it until they don't care...
OH boy it's time for chickie love. I just got 6 new babies too. They are red sex links. I have 6 full grown hens at home too. But I am a fool for a baby chick.
Help, RIR 1yr old fine yesterday. Today wings out slightly, mouth breathing, staying to herself, tail down. No swelling. Havent felt her yet. Can she be saved?
Two things I have learned 1.Most important- they have to have somewhere to run for cover 2. They learn what to do the older they get. When they are young they don't seem to get it. My older ones run for cover the first sign of hawk fly over. The younger ones stand still and watch-big mistake.
I had the same thing with a young pullet. I tried isolating her but decided to just let her be. She limped for about 1 mo then she got completely better and is still doing great. She layed around alot and did not hang with the others b/c she could not keep up.
I have a sex-link that is 9mos old. Her eggs are big! XL and the shells are very thin. She has xtra calcium in her food, available on the ground, and I feed them all yogurt and peanut butter everyday. Her shells are the only ones that are that thin. I don't end up getting many of her eggs b/c...
So that's why the egg numbers are down! Too dark b/f and a/f work to have timme to give snacks. Gave lots of snacks yesterday and today-twice as many eggs?
