I’m in a densely populated urban area, the only people with guns where I live are cops or gang members...not sure it’s even legal to fire a weapon, not that it stops people. And the hawk was just living his best life...eating a chicken that had spent her last hours eating thanksgiving leftovers...
There is one. We just let them loose in the yard daytimes. The pen is around 60 square feet (if I remember my dimensions correctly) for now 3 birds, so it’s big enough, just boring.
The hawk flew into this:
We arrived home today to find a hawk eating our favorite bird inside the coop. We’ve not had a problem in 2.5 years and leave the birds out to range all day most days...they have lots of cover, super shocked that it went INTO my coop.
How long do I have to leave my birds cooped up or supervised...
It’s a grain mix. I fill their feeder most days (although not if they’ve free ranged and gotten kitchen scraps) and have a scoop that I’ve weighed out, so I know that about .25lb per bird is what’s going in.
She was eating well, they free range most days and get new organics feed and kitchen/garden scraps when we have them- they recently got sweet potato peelings and cabbage ends. No new birds, I got them all together in 2016. No mite or lice issues that I’m aware of. The other 4 are healthy (as far...
i figure this is probably one of those random chicken deaths, but I haven’t seen anything that matched this, so I thought I’d post it and see if anyone has suspicions.
My 2.5 year old campine’s feathers started turning white in August. I thought she might be early to molt. They got...
She was in the nest, she can get out, all the chicks are hatched. I washed and dried and warmed the chick as best I could, but I had to go to work and so I put her back under mama....but toward the front so she doesn't get pooped on again. The next time I'll be able to check is tomorrow when it...
They've been all hatched since yesterday morning, so I figured it would be ok. I cleaned the baby up as best I could and have her inside in a heating pad resting and drying off. Her eyes seem stuck shut, but she's peeping loudly and seems to be a fighter, she's also drinking water when it's...
...I only saw two chicks of her three and then smelled something terrible. My broody had let out a huge poop and it landed on her hatchling's head and she was stuck in it. I cleaned it up, pulled her out, wiped her face, but her eyes are all white and she seems like she's struggling. I gave her...
John Hancock, of course, being the obvious rooster name- but Hannah for a pullet?
The guy I got them from says there are two red dominique eggs in my little clutch. I've searched through the forums and there's a bunch of conflicting info, but the only people claiming to be breeding them are...
I'm not sure where that is. I ended up finding a guy on Craigslist who just gave me three eggs out of his incubator, which was nice. I popped them under her broody buns and hope that she keeps on them for another week. Currently formulating 4th of July chicken names. Paul Revere, but Reeva if...
Yo Georgians! Does anyone have any hatching (but very close) or day old ish chicks for sale within about an hour of atlanta? I've got a stubborn broody buff and I'm looking for 3ish to allow her to hatch out. Also, it's the only way I think my wife will agree to more chickens. :celebrate
It's illegal to have a rooster where I am, so there isn't one in my flock. She laid her first egg this morning, so I thought maybe it's hormonal, but that still seems generally abnormal. The run is 5x20x8 for 5 hens, but I have about 1/4 acre where they free range and she was going after her...
This morning I woke up to a mega ruckus coming from my chickens. I went out there and my buff and BR were on one end of the run and the other three were perched up at the other. The buff was just SQUAWKING loudly. When I let them loose, I realized that she was bleeding from her comb, so I...
I'm also in Atlanta (Lakewood neighborhood) with chickens. Welcome! The Georgians thread is indeed super big and fairly active, and the links they gave you all are super helpful. I have 5 gals that I got from mypetchicken.com and the experience was great and my birds are now a healthy 15 weeks...
@lizdelc - I'm waiting too! Mine are 15 weeks and I know as it's getting darker I may have a LONG wait.... one of them recently tossed all of the hay out of the nest boxes and I had to put a bigger lip on them and yesterday I found that someone had taken the hay that was mixed with the bedding...
