    After taking a break from chickens for a couple of years, I now have a few silkie chicks and call ducklings. As far as how dry it has been here, there were people setting off fireworks a couple days ago...pretty worrisome as I think about anything right now could start a fire.

    I forgot to post this. I have 18 Icelandic eggs due the first week of August and 20 Coturnix eggs due the 30th. :) More quail eggs going in next week and saving up Icie eggs though the girls have slowed down a little.

    Dog has Intel on what's in the incubator??

    She is "guardy" from the time the eggs are in the incubator, always has her nose in the incubator and brooder when I am turning eggs or taking care of chicks. As far as interacting, she has a sense about her not to hurt them,I cant explain it. And when they go she cries and cries...

    My dog ( Neapolitan mastiff) is involved in the incubation process from beginning to end. She KNOWS, though Im not sure how? She would guard the eggs and chicks with her life.

    Well, even after power outages I got a few guineas for my aunt, now waiting to see if any ducks made it. Im saving some Icelandic eggs for myself this time around, I have five so far, I dont plan on putting in any less than 10. I also still want to incubate Hedemoras and maybe Coturnix quail...

    Gah.Its a chore keeping everyone cool!! My son brought home more plants to put in the front hosta-flower garden. So that means more potted plants for me to water with water jugs, whoohoo.     Sigh. Not such good luck this time around. The one that was pipping died. :( Maybe more will still hatch but I have a feeling it was a bust for these eggs. It happens to me, not often but it does.

    If they are clean, I dont wash them either as they go bad faster when the bloom is gone. Just my take on it. I only wash them right before use.

    My Icelandics are all given Scandinavian names. :) A theme is good,easier to remember.

    Do you slaughter your laying hens after 2-3 years, or are they pets for you?

    I have decided mine will be pets and live out the duration of their life here but then I only have a few.

    My test hatch after adding a new roo has started. I candled a couple days ago so know he is doing his job. :) Pics this wknd if all goes well. :)

    I will probably just sell these few instead of keep them. It helps with feed and I have plenty of time to incubate eggs for myself.
