    Are ducks destructive?

Yes, our female duck is a Pekin and I would call her neither friendly nor nervous. Same with her husband, who's a Buff Orpington. Thank you for your help. I have a feeling that if we do get any, they'll most likely be from the farm supply store as my husband won't want to pay the price of...

    What are some not-so-aggressive breeds?

Thank you so much for your help, everyone. Sounds like it will be either the Buff or the Pilgrim if we purchase them from Metzer. The Dewlap Toulouse sound wonderful but are definitely out of our price range.

    What are some not-so-aggressive breeds?

I apologize if this question has been asked multiple times but I looked through several pages and couldn't find anything of relation. Anyway, I'd like to add a few geese to our flock of chickens and two ducks (we're actually considering greatly reducing our chicken flock and increasing the ducks...

    Are ducks destructive?

You know, I don't know if we're just lucky or if it's because we have so much space (we live in the boondocks. Our "backyard" is a yonder mountain top.) and water (two creeks - one big, one very small) or because we have only two but they've never turned any puddles - and we have a lot; we live...

    Are ducks destructive?

We currently have two ducks that are an integrated part of our chicken flock. I love them to pieces and find them far more charming than the chickens. They also don't possess any of the annoying and maddening bad habits that the chickens do (i.e. crapping all over our front and back porch and...

    frustrated with free-ranging

Fred's Hens : I won't even discuss the special skill the chicken has to wait until they are on the sidewalk, the deck or patio before letting rip a giant poop. I think I scare it out of them...literally. Every time I run out to shoo them off, they leave me a parting gift.

    frustrated with free-ranging

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I so appreciate it and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond - we were away all day yesterday. Someone asked about our acreage. I don't really know exactly how to describe it. We live out in the country on a plot with a lot of old, rusted and mangled...

My Pekin is pumping out the eggs!

My 5 month old Pekin duck, Caroline, started laying two weeks ago and has, since then, produced a dozen eggs. I'm amazed. Generally, how often does a Pekin lay once there production cycle is established?

    frustrated with free-ranging

It's my own fault for not really understanding the destruction and mess which leads to frustration that comes with free-ranging chickens. I'm considering downsizing our flock(currently 20+)and limiting their time spent free-ranging(it's currently 10:30 am until bedtime). I'm just curious if...

    Drake mating/attacking my hens

Thanks, guys. Question: Will his wife grow lonely without him or will the chickens be company enough for her?

My EE hasn't laid in 2 weeks

Thanks, guys. I'm sure the ducks or one the other hens looked at her wrong and stressed her out.

    Drake mating/attacking my hens

I have a 5 month old male duck that has been displaying some pretty aggressive behavior lately. I'm not sure if it's part of his mating technique but he's been chasing the hens and pullets, capturing them by seizing their neck and proceeds to yank and shake violently at it. Sometimes he'll do it...

My EE hasn't laid in 2 weeks

My Easter Egger, who, at 3 years old has always been one of our champion layers at 3-5 eggs a week, decided to quit two weeks ago. I'm assuming she's stressed out for some unknown reason? It seems like anything and everything can stress out a chicken.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

We got our first egg the day before yesterday. I think it could have been from either a Barred Rock or a Dominique. I saw one of them in a nesting box a few days ago(they were in head first so I couldn't tell if it was a BR or a Dominique), checking it out and the next day we found a wee light...

Why Aren't My Chickens Laying? Here Are Your Answers!

Quote: While chickens will continue to lay for many many years, their production does decrease after age 2. Even production chickens in ideal production setting. I fell in love with chickens when I helped put in an automatic egg collection system in a production hen house. On the lower...

Why Aren't My Chickens Laying? Here Are Your Answers!

We have eight 3 year old hens that have been living with us for over two months and we're only getting about a dozen a week. I've run out of patience, especially since they're eating all the dog food and destroying my plants on top of not pulling their weight. That's what I get for buying a...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

We got one out of eight yesterday. A word of advice; never decide it's a good idea to buy 3 year old hens. They are bloody useless.
