I'm concerned because my hens are not too friendly & they have a feather pulling habit (which they just seemed to kick - now that there are only 4 of them). :(
Our new chicks are 7 weeks & we're about to start integrating them to the big coop & we know at least ONE is a rooster. So, I'm a...

Looked at TSC, no Rooster Booster, no Nu Stock. ??
I think it's the barred-rocks (the older chickens).
I'm wondering if I get some new chicks & get rid of the BRs, if the Buffs will peck?
Even though they don't now. ??
We've been having the same problem for about 1.5 yrs. We've tried everything.
We tried separating them.
We tried cat food & BOSS.
We even free range now during the day (not smart if you want to keep them, but at this point I don't care).
The only thing that remotely worked, but I got tired...
Yes, we removed the original pecker, now they are almost ALL doing it, so we put her back in.
We have 7 chickens in a 8x8(x12)' coop w/ a 12x23' run (something like that).
I told my husband they were bored, and we should build some more stuff for their run (they already have a little leanto...
My chickens have been pulling each others feathers out around the tail base.
It's driving me bonkers. We've tried saddles (too much work to keep clean, etc).
We've tried high protein chicken feed. Nothing is working.
So, I bought some dry cat food to give the chickens. Now I've read here...
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, didn't know if that was better or better to start anew??
I have 4 BR hens that are about 1yr 8 mos & their production has slowed WAY, WAY down.
Any ways to help boost laying for these young ladies?
The plan is to separate my feather puller from the flock before I introduce my 3 new hens. I have 4 roos (currently free-ranging), and would like to keep one. Can I put the feather puller w/ one rooster in my other coop??? Or would he just wear her down?
I know I could try, just...
Okay, I'm confused as to what those do?
They are like horse blinders? They clip onto the beak and attach in the nostrils?
Oh, and thanks for the replies.
I'm at my wits end, and I am done making saddles for my chickens.
I have a feather puller, and I'm 99% sure she's the only one doing it.
I have 3 new hens to introduce, and I don't want them missing their back feathers too.
Should I trim her beak?
Or maybe put her in the "teen" coop when I...
Yes, thanks for the positive stories. We had to cage our one chick/hen that was 4 wks older than the newbies for a few days. Now they are all palls. I am a bit scared to put them in with the old grumps though. Soon I guess.
Thanks for the, uh, answers.
We've just been letting her brood. It's going to be 100* today and 103* tomorrow. I am still worried about her, if it's that hot, in the late afternoon/evening it will be 110* in the coop at least.
We tried to put 2 BO hens that were about 9 wks old w/ one red sex link hen who was about 4 wks older than them. And the RSL was very violent, going after the heads & holding them down by the necks. Hubby put her in a rabbit cage in the coop w/ the other 2 girls running free. After about 3...
We have 4 Rhode Island Red roos that are 14 weeks old and separated from my yr old hens.
At what age do the roos start doing their business?
I have a BR hen that has gone broody. Is she broody because of the new roos that are running around outside their run? I'm worried because she...
