It really depends on your set up.. your coop design. If you free range is another factor. Depends what you do as to what animals would be the worst predator.
They do free range some. But even locked up she dont lay. There isnt that good of hiding places where they free range that I wouldn't have found it by now.
I have a pullet thats a BCM CLB mix I beleive.... OE.. shes about a year old... refuses to lay at all.

You can never have enough space. 24sqf is small thats less than 5x5ft.
I keep 10 to 11 birds in 10x10 coops. They get along real well though. Then they free range most days.... thats the big factor.
If they dont free range you need a much bigger coop and run.
They die.. it happens.. raise more chicks... not many people know chicken illnesses... most of it is all chatter and guesses. There arent many vets for chickens in texas, and it'd be more expensive than raising a new chick anyways. Im in seguin. Not far from you.

I like integrating new birds first by separate cages next to each other where they can see and interact through the wire... then after several weeks, let all roam together free ranging.... then they can peck each other and figure out their pecking order free range where they can all get away...
If they are in the same yard to mingle still, they will have spats and hens will mix. The other rooster would still put him in his place over dominance. They gotta be totally separated.... way apart...
