okay, thanks! it's so worrisome to even see the pin feathers on their wings! thanks for setting my mind at ease. we've had chickens for 2-1/2 years now and this is the first time I've noticed a moult. not sure how they did it undetected last fall. but I didn't see it that time.
My two-year-old chickens are moulting. Is this normal for this time of year? It's cold in november! I can't help but worry that they'll freeze with all their feathers falling out. But if that's a normal behavior for this time of year, I guess they'll be fine. But is it normal? They are losing a...
thanks, everyone, you were right! we came home on sunday from a weekend of camping in what turned out to be freezing cold temps for this time of year (in the 40's for the highs and the 30's for the lows. brrrrrrrrr!) And happily found two hatched keets snuggled in with their adoptive broody...
We have 7 guinea eggs due to hatch on Saturday. We'll be gone camping until Sunday. The eggs are under a broody hen. it's been getting down into the 40's at night here in Kentucky. The brooder with the hen and eggs is inside our insulated barn. It's still chilly in there at night, but protected...
yes, I've found a few first eggs on the floor of our coop, too. after that, they're in the nest boxes with the other eggs. they figure it out very fast.
our buff orpingtons usually start laying around 20-22 weeks. but we have chickens right now that range from 23 weeks to 26 weeks, and some...
ironic - I called my brother, who is a gun fanatic (oh wait, did I say that???), to ask advice on which gun to buy to dispatch the coyote in short order. while I was on the phone with him, driving north on I-65, I saw a dead coyote on the side of the road. that's how abundant they are in KY at...
thanks for the info. that's expensive to ship. I figured it would be.
luckily, we found a white pekin girl about 15 miles away, so we're picking her up tomorrow.
shelley, well, he has plenty of chicken buddies, that's for sure! he's in our big ol' coop with them right now, so that he doesn't have to be alone. he rules the roost, so to speak, when he's in there. he is a sweetie. very friendly once he's not in that pond!
he has a baby pool to swim in. not...
ctrash, sorry that Amy couldn't come home today. I hope the additional treatment gives her body a chance to heal so that she can recover completely. I, too, would spend vacation money to treat my dog. Dogs are so special.
thanks for the kind thoughts about our lost girl. my husband is making...
cthrash, I hope Amy feels better tomorrow when you go to pick her up. Sounds like she's trying hard to get well.
hope everyone is doing okay in the weather. we've had non-stop rain for days now. our sump pump came on in our basement tonight. no flooding indoors, but the water was pouring down...
I'd like to buy a female white pekin duck if anyone has one for sale. I'm near louisville, ky, so within a 2-3 hour drive would be preferrable. thanks!
The coyotes are getting very brave. We just lost another female duck to a coyote yesterday. We lost the first one two weeks ago while we were on vacation. We assumed the coyote struck at night, since we left the ducks unprotected at night.
But yesterday, the coyote came in the late afternoon...
allanimals, these were a week old and yours were 1-2 days old. I wonder if that is what made the difference?
katy, that sounds just like the babies we had. so sad.
shelley, I forgot to take my camera and my cell phone was nearly full. I snapped one shot of my little boy with Gina in the truck. So cute...she was feeding him bunny grahams one by one. very sweet.
