I usually buy shavings at the farm store for my coops. My husband recently did a wood project and ended up with a big trashcan full of shavings, really soft curls, no chunks, but not fine like saw dust either. It was just regular 2x4s, not pressure treat or anything special.
Can I use this in my...

About 3 weeks ago, I split my flock of 25 to try to get some barred rock eggs. 8 BR hens and a roo went to the smaller coop (it's big enough for them, I've kept 10 in there before without problems). the other 16 mixed and other breeds plus a roo stayed in the big coop.
Hens had just been...
I have hatched many large batches of eggs with my incubator (holds up to 9 dozen). But this spring I will need to do staggered hatches for the first time. I need a smaller bator for a hatcher. Any recommendations?
(I'd rather buy than build. Just don't have the time right now.)

My mom came up with this recipe for deviled eggs when I was little because my dad and I didn't like mustard. They are AMAZING!
Heavenly No Mustard Deviled Eggs
We found this little bird today in our open garage. It has a bracelet, so it obviously belongs to someone, but we have asked neighbors without success. I'd post an ad on Craigslist, but I don't even know what kind of bird this is (I have only ever had chickens). It has quite a bit of purplish...
Found a chicken acting strange this morning. She (or he) is a 2 1/2 month old Black Copper Marans. When I opened the door and all the other chickens rushed out to the yard as usual, she stayed behind on the roost. I puttered around filling water and such - she just sat there. When I was done...
Our new coop is kind of odd dimensions - 5'x21' and 7' tall (we were working with some prebuilt 5'x7' sheds and put them end to end to form one side of the run). Since it's so tall and narrow I planned to make sort of "shelves" on each end 2' deep x the 5' width of the coop. The bottom level...
I'm new to chickens (6 barred rocks I got in September just started laying). Yesterday my son let them out to scratch around and didn't pay enough attention. Something scared them and they all hid. Only found 5. Looked for hours for that 6th bird. This morning she was laying dead next to an...
Ok - so I have my first chicks in the brooder - almost 4 wks old now. My husband is building a raised coop for them (about 3 feet off the ground with a ramp to go up). When they are big enough to go outside will they also be big enough for me not to worry about them falling out of the coop?
I have 2 wk old Barred Rock chicks. Up until today it has been in the 90's, so every day my son and I have taken them outside for a little fresh air and let them peck around in the grass. Not long - just 20-30 minutes.
Today and for the next few days it will be quite a bit cooler (upper 60's...
I just got my first Barred Rock chicks from Atwoods. The lady who helped me had no idea how old they are - and so I was hoping someone here could give me some idea.
I took this close-up of her wing so you could see how she's starting to get real feathers
Thank you for your help.
I'm looking for a few White Rock pullets or chicks. Would prefer to find some locally - but haven't had luck with that yet. I really want to get started this fall so I can expect eggs by spring. Feel free to PM me.
