Found the weirdest thing today. An egg in our coop with no shell, but the membrane was very rough & completely intact. It's also normal size. It's so odd.... lol I am not worried about calcium or anything cuz my birds get oyster shell & layer feed & the eggs with shells have super hard shells...
Let my 2 younger chickens & my 4 guineas out yesterday. We couldn't get the last 2 guineas to go in the coop last night, but this morning they were hanging out right outside the coop. Let them all out again today. Let's see if they go back at dusk!!
I have a large coop full of layers, 13 to be exact. I also have a small coop full of 4 guineas, a buff orp & what looks like a red sex link. The birds in the small coop are still small enough, though barely, to squeeze through the fence. I would like to be able to let them out with the others...
Please share here what your take is on re-using the egg shells for calcium. If you bake & crush them well is it safe? I would like to try it if I can be sure my hens won't get that bad habit of pecking their eggshells....Thanks!!!
As far as egg laying I posted a little while back wondering how much longer it takes a RIR to lay than a white leghorn. Just thought I'd share that according to my chickens it takes approximately 2 weeks longer for a RIR to lay their 1st egg. We got our 1st brown egg yesterday. YAY!!
We got some for tick control. They are not full grown yet but big enough to leave the coop. However, I have not let them out yet I am scared I will never see them again. How do I let them out & know they will return?? Thanks...
Anyone know the age difference for starting to lay?? They are all the same age but I have been getting eggs from ONLY the White Leghorns for over a week.
Seems there is a LOT of poo lately in the nest boxes, a lot more poo than eggs!!! Would closing them off at night to be certain the hens aren't roosting there at night help?? Any other ideas what to do?? I don't really want to be cleaning out nasty poo filled nest boxes every day if it can be...
Hi everyone. I am new here and have a question for all the experts. We started our mini farm with chickens this past spring and love it. SOOO, now we want to expand & have some dairy goats. We were told that the goats cannot eat chicken food as it is extremely toxic to them so not to have them...
Hi everyone I am new here. Got our 1st chickens this past spring we have 10 RIR and 3 White Leghorns. The WL's just started to lay about a week ago. We generally get one egg a day, although for 1 or 2 of those days we got 2 eggs. Just was wondering how long it will take before the WL's are...
