    Mystery from Strombergs

my order was supposed to be all pullets but this is looking like a cockrel and I can't figure out the breed. It was a solid black chick now at a month old it's getting brown lacing. Pushy little snot too. I had to isolate him from his same age mates. Straight comb, black legs. Any ideas?

    Sandhill preservation

Has anyone got a chick shipment from them yet this year? I know the weather has slammed them in many nasty ways, but I'm way past the date they gave me and would like to know if I'm ever going to see chicks. Their website says they dont have time to answer emails or phone calls. If they can't...

    We got guinea'd

My husband bought 3 chicks from a bantam bin at a feedstore to keep a lone chick he had company. I pretty much ignored them since I was NOT happy with the amount of hatches he'd done let alone buying more! The other day I heard weird sounds so I looked in the brooder to see if anything was wrong...

    Guinea Keets?

My husband bought 3 "Bantam chicks" at a Wilco farm store to keep a lone chick he had company. At this pint we know they aren't chickens and are assuming they are Guineas. Are these standard looking Guinea chicks?

Making good yeast bread a tip

Use the red heat lamp you have in your chick brooder. Clean it good then suspend it about 2 ft above your work surface. Set your bread bowl and all your dry ingredients under the lamp to warm up while you get it all together. Proof your yeast, get it started in a bowl with milk and sugar, I use...

    Turkey Poults at large

I let my 7 wk old BR poults out in the yard for the first time last night. I was a little worried some of the roosters might harass them but it was the other way around! The biggest dominant Tom took out after any rooster that looked at any of them funny. He didn't just charge them them walk...

    Yummmm, hairy legs!

My husband came out to help me paint the turkey coop. He's never spent anytime in with the poults and I didn't think to warn him about wearing shorts. They were FASCINATED by his hairy legs and enthralled by the red band around the top of his socks. I told him to just ignore them for a while and...

I need 3 numbered bands not the min order of 25 all the poultry supply places sell. I won't go through 25 turkey bands in 10 years! Anyone know any place I can buy just a few turley sized NUMBERED bands or anyone with spares willing to sell me some?

5 wk old BRs can fly how high?!

Over the 6 1/2 ft fence I put around their new run! Now everyone is back in the basement brooder until I get the run topped this weekend.

    Poults are not HELPFUL!

So I thought since their run is done and their coop is 95% done I'd take the poults out to their new digs while I worked on the last bits that needed doing! Not a good plan. Trying to work with poults attacking your boots laces or trying to steal your nails is not easy. They have no fear at all...

    Sniffly snorks now conjunctivitis

First a bunch of my adolescent Dorkings got a snotty head cold. Sneezing, snotty noses, etc., but seemed to recover just fine with a course of Tylan in their water. The day after the Tylan was down some that had been sneezing and some that hadn't all came down with conjuctivitis. We'ved been...

    The BRs new turkey corral

A cheap gazebo kit from the discount store with the legs only half up and a bit of fencing makes a great play pens for the poults until I get their run and coop built. They still go inside to their secure brooder at night.

    Frustratedd by dead roo

My big 2yr old mutt rooster was fine last weekend, and seemed ok Wednesday, I was dealing with another emergency Thursday so i can't guarantee he was ok then. Tonight when I came home he didn't escort his hens out I found him laying on the coop floor to weak to stand and gasping. He was a...
