are the chicks active? I had a chick hatch last night about 6:30pm. To my suprize, because it was only day 15 in the incubator. ( Must have come from a broody nest?) Anyway, it's in the brooder and I've heard it chirp, seen it drink water, but spends most of it's time in the corner by the...
Since the wife works on computers, I asked her is she had a spare fan for my IglooBator . She asked "What Size" ? Ok DIY Bator guys, What size are you using? Thanks
Since I am building an incubator, I am seeing different post"s of DIY incubators. A lot of them have hardware cloth on the bottom of the incubators. What is the purpose of putting it in the incubator ?
I have aquired this huge Igloo cooler that I'm thinking of making a Bator / Brooder. The cooler is 37 1/4" long, 14 3/4" wide and 15 3/4" deep. Since I only plan on incubating 12 at a time, I believe this can be cordoned of and use 1/2 for an incubator and the other half used for a brooder as...
I have started a "homemade" bator (basically to see if it will be feasable for me to incubate vs buying chicks). I have everything pretty well set, but a question entered my mind a while ago. With the nights starting to get cooler, what is the maxium temperature drop allowed, before things go...
This is all new to me, so please bear with me. i have had a broody for a few weeks now. Today there are 3 chicks & she's still sitting on a couple of eggs. She is in a coop that also houses a rooster and another hen. During the day, other hens like to lay in the nesting boxes in this coop. I am...
I would like to consolidate my 24 hen's & 1 rooster into 1 coup instead of the 3 coop's that I have now. They free range on an acre of land together all day so I know they know/live with each other. At night, 3 go in 1 coop, 3 go into another coop & the rest go in the other coop. I would like...
2 of my 26 GSL's are starting to lay. Pullet eggs, but they are eggs. My question: Since I'm due to buy feed today or tomorrow, should I get "layer" or should I continue with "grower" until I see more eggs? My GSL's will be 18 weeks this Sunday. The first egg came at 16 weeks...
I have found that my 29 RSL's (going on 16 weeks), are having a ball raiding the "sweet corn" field next door. I have heard that corn heats them up, So, is this going to be a problem for them?
My RSL's are going on 12 weeks old right now. I have the nesting box's blocked off, but am wondering about when I should open them up to the girls? I'm thinking about 16 weeks old or should I wait longer ? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated, Thanks.
Barred Rock Roo & Hen. His mating is tearing her back up. No feathers & looking quite raw. Should I quarintine him ? What should I do about her back? Thanks
( If this is in the wrong forum, please move. )
My flock, 9 weeks old, 29 of them, are still in the coop that I put them in from the day I got them. I have now built a new coop and need to seperate some of them into the new coop. I was wondering about the best time of day or night to seperate them? Also, the new coop has a watering nipple...
I see alot of people using hay in their coop. My question, what kind of hay? I know dairy cows in my area eat a green hay and "straw hay" is used for bedding. I'm thinking straw hay is used in the coops. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I know my chicks are only 5 weeks old, but what is the average heigth that water nipples are installed for full size chickens ? I have just ordered some nipples for my Red Sex Links.
Now that I'm building a new coop, I'd like to update my feed & watering systems. The nipple water's look like a good idea, but then it dawned on me in the winter, will the system be useless? Where I live, the water would freeze & I'd be back to hauling water to the flock. What are some of you...
