I started a new flock of bantams this summer and got my first egg today! Nothing happier than checking on the girls and seeing that first egg in the nest. Love it! A great end to a great day!
Hey everyone. Feeling pretty sad and stupid and that I let my flock down so i thought I'd post something incase anyone else thought using a piece of sod in the run was a good idea.
Garden store had strips of sod on sale and I thought my girls would like the fresh grass as a treat. Apparently...
Hey there!
This will be my first winter with a bantam flock. Do I need to take any special precautions to protect them from the cold that is different than i do for my full size ladies? They are in separate coops.
I have a coop and covered run area for 14 bantams. I'm looking to put up- nothing fancy- some sort of fenced enclosure just so I can let them out to free range a bit but still keep them contained.
Trying to keep it as simple as possible, I was just thinking a few stakes and plastic fencing...
I've had chickens for over 10 years now and have never had roosting bar issues. All of my other chickens had a natural instinct to roost at night.
I have a new flock of (14) 5 month old bantams. They took forever to learn to go into the coop at night. Its completely predator proof and they...
Here's some updated pics of my 15w old silkies. 3 have no sign of combs or waddles, 1 does. I know silkies can be a real challenge to sex and can fool the most seasoned silkie pros. In the pics below, all of the pics of a silkie with a comb are the same chicken.
I've searched the forum for some info on mites. Most threads I'm seeing describe black or red mites. I think i have something different. Maybe a type of lice?
These are so incredibly tiny and look mostly like dust. Grayish in color and if I look closely I think they're moving. Not 100% sure...
I have some 12w old silkies. One is developing much quicker than the others. They look exactly the same except one is getting a purple face, comb, and waddles.
Too soon to yell gender yet?
Three look exactly like this but without as much color development in the face.
The silkie guessing...
I'm new to bamtams and have a great variety of 11 week olds. I've got 20 chicks with about 9 different breeds. (Not sure how to phrase this without everyone replying "duh" but...... They're really small lol!!!
My full size ladies weren't full size at 11 weeks so I'm hoping the bantams aren't...
I've got some buff brahama's and just making sure I'm looking at the roos and pullets correctly. They're 7 weeks old and some are developing a nice red comb and others are not developing anything. Just looking to see thoughts on whether the gender is clear or if pullets could just be slow to...
I'm new to silkies and have 4 eight week old straight runs. I know 8 weeks is very early to tell gender for silkies from what I'm reading from everyone. From what my fellow BYC'ers have said is to look for big round poof heads as an initial indication of gender. Well, I've 3 with fluffy, round...
I've never had silkies before and have 5 straight runs that are 6 weeks old. They all look identical to each other. What features do they get to start telling gender and when do they start to develop them?
I have some roughly 6 week old black frizzle cochins which ended up not having the frizzle gene so.... I have done beautiful black cochins haha!
A few are really developing pronounced combs. Everyone agree that picking the boys from the girls is pretty simple here or am I off base? The comb...
I got a straight run bantam assortment about 6 weeks ago and can't figure out what breed these 3 are. They sent a list of "possibilities" but none match what I'm seeing. Up until a week ago, all three chicks looked the same and I was thinking sebright but now I'm not sure. I'm also not sure if...
Never had frizzles before! I got 3 black frizzle chicks a few weeks ago. One started to get their curly feathers earlier this week. The other 2 have feathers that aren't curling at all.
Is this normal? Will the 2 that aren't curling start to curl? Here's a few pics. Sorry they're terrible pics...
Hey there everyone! It's been awhile since I've been on here. I moved 3 years ago and haven't had chickens during these few years and I missed having them terribly. I got 16 assorted bantam chicks last week and 16 more coming Thursday. Really excited to get back into raising chickens and...
I've got 12 girls but only one has these black spots on her comb. It hasn't been cold at all so I don't think it's frostbite. Occasionally one has had this before and it resolves on its own. It's only on the comb, not the waddles. I figured I'd see if anyone knows what it actually is.
