2 days ago...we lost one of our white silkie chickens. No carcass...just a pile of feathers, and then a trail of feathers leading into the woods. This was in the middle of the day mind you...like 2:00 in the afternoon.
So we went out and bought a trap thinking a fox was stalking the chickens...

First time chicken owners...and we are almost through our first winter together. That being said, one of our silkies decided to go broody. We weren't sure what to do. In a panic, we decided to let her sit on some. So we marked 6 eggs, put them in her favorite box, and let her sit on them...
Its out of season...and the cold weather is really starting to sink in up here in Maine...perfect time for one of my silkies to decide to go broody. Anyway...thats not really the issue. I'm ok with her going broody...eventually...I'll need to start the cycle again at some point...but the dead...
Little guy hurt himself somehow...has a hanging nail on his foot. The others started going after it. So I moved him inside for a little while...and now we get this for a while.

sorry,,,couldn't resist. But anyway...The girls are 5 weeks old today, and as a birthday present, we let em out for the first time. Probably a bit to soon, but the weather was nice, I had nothing going on anyway...so if one decided to take me for a run, I was ok with it.
