White Bantam Frizzle Cochin Cockerel in SF East Bay

We have a white bantam frizzle cochin cockerel available to a good home. We've raised him since he was 4 weeks old and he's a healthy and robust little guy. He's about 10 months old. I'd like to rehome him because we have too many roosters and the hens are getting overworked. I'm not able to...

Integrating a Vision-Impaired Rooster into the Flock

We recently rescued a rooster (from a coyote) and since none of our neighbors have claimed him, he's still with us. He appears to be blind in one eye (the eye is clouded over), and the pupil in the other eye is really small, which leads me to think the vision is impaired in that eye as well. I...

    What breed is this rooster?

We found this rooster and none of our neighbors have claimed him. He appears to be blind in one eye and has limited vision in the other so I'm taking him in. Curious as to his breed, though. Any ideas? TIA!

    Is This Cockerel Anything Special?

I have what I think is an Easter Egger/Ameraucana and Black Copper Marans cockerel. I have too many males so I am planning on rehoming him. But first I want to double-check that I'm not giving away a bird with special coloring or anything like that. Is he one that I should keep? Thanks!

Is This Cockerel an Americauna or an Easter Egger?

I'm thinking of buying this cockerel that's advertisted on CL as an Americauna, but I wonder if he's actually an Easter Egger? My knowledge of Americaunas are limited, but I don't recognize the coloring. Plus, his beard and muffs don't look very big. Thanks for any light you can shed!

Night time temp around 33F, can I still plant something?

I live in Northern California and we've been experiencing record high temps during the day of high 60s/low 70s. However, the night temps get down to around 33 at the lowest. I have a small garden bed and am tempted to plant lettuce (but I'm open to anything else recommended). Is 33 too low for...

East Bay, CA (Oakley) French Black Copper Marans Rooster

I am giving away one of our French Black Copper Marans roosters (to make room for an incoming Americauna rooster). The eligible bachelor up for grabs is around 1 year old and his lineage is Bev Davis. Edited to add - he is very tame as per the BCM breed.

Is Fighting an Indication of Gender?

I recently introduced 3 new young silkies to my silkie roo. He immediately pecked on one of them and did it again to the same one the next time they were in the coop together. He didn't peck the other two. Does this mean he recognized the pecked chicken as another male? Also, I keep seeing two...

Put Silkie in his own coop and run or with the rest of the flock?

I currently have about 20 hens, 2 full size roosters, 1 bantam cochin frizzle roo, 2 cockerels, 1 pullet, and 10 2-week-old chicks all coexisting in a coop and run. I just got a Silkie rooster earlier this week. I've been keeping him in his own dog kennel inside the coop. I'm getting a...

Please help identify this rescue roo

My neighbor found this fella on her porch and asked me to take him in. I have no idea which breed he is. I'm guessing he is pretty old though?

Adding eggs to broody hen's clutch

I put my broody hen on some eggs Sunday evening. I know you're not supposed to add more eggs, but today (late Tuesday morning) I found two eggs that I really wanted her to hatch so I added them to her clutch. Is the difference between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning too great for these two...

Please help with breed and gender

Hi there. There are 1-month old chicks for sale on my local Craig's List. Unfortunately, the seller can't discern the gender or the breed. The gender doesn't matter to me as much as the breed. The seller is not sure if it's a silkie. I adore silkies but can't have them for now as my other...
