    Moving my ducks...

Hello friends, I am a new duck owner. I bought 4 ducklings one year ago and they are living happily with my chickens in their coop. However we have sold our house and will be moving this summer. I will sadly be leaving my chickens and their coop, but we have purchased property with a pond and...

    Duck question .....

I have a flock of 18 hens and 1 bantam rooster. I am thinking of adding 2 ducks. Would the ducks wander down to my neighbors pond while they are free- ranging? The pond is not visible from the coop and it is approx 100 yards away. Would they find it anyway? I do not want to have ducks if they...

Please help me figure this out...

My bird's egg production is way too low. I have a rooster (bantam) and 13 hens. I also have 6 babies in a separate area of the coop. My 13 laying hens are producing about 4-5 eggs a day and I should easily be getting 10 or more. All the hens are young, the coop is clean, the birds all get along...

Puzzled...is something going on with Mt Healthy chicks?

I bought 5 chicks from Mt Healthy and one by one they are falling ill. Weak, disoriented, stumbling and general confusion. This looks like a neurological disorder. I am in my 4 th year with my backyard chickens and keep a flock of 15-20. Every chick I have purchased with the exception of these 5...

Moving the nesting boxes and wondering....

Will this cause a problem? I would like to move out my current boxes and replace them with fewer of a slightly different type. Will this disrupt my layers? I don't want my egg production to drop. Thank you.

I have a flock of 14, many different breeds, sizes and ages. Some raised together, some added to the coop later. ALL of my chickens live in harmony, are healthy and seem happy, egg production is sky high....except for 1 rooster. He is a 1 year old Polish. He is cocky and in the past few months...

Can the Polish community please help me out?

I have a White Crested Polish rooster who is being feather-picked. I have a flock of 15 and I am not sure who is doing the picking as I have never witnessed it. However the evidence is there, and today when I opened the coop he was hiding in one of the nesting boxes. What can I do to fix this...

    Hawk threat....

My birds stay in a secure run and coop most of the day, but I do allow free-ranging when I am in the yard. I try to have them out at least a couple of hours daily and so far so good. Now I am noticing a hawk hanging out in the area (certainly because of my birds) and now I am wondering what to...

What is best for the run floor/ground area?

I have a new coop and run. As expected, the chickens have eaten all of the grass in the run and it is now mostly dirt. I rake it out every other day and due to the tin roof and the location, it is staying remarkably dry. My original plan was to fill it with sand at some point (prob next year)...

Lost one of my Swedish Flower Hens....

When I went out to my coop this morning I found one of my Swedish Flower Hens dead on the floor. No sign of injury or illness. Yesterday I spent part of the day cleaning the coop and run, all was well with all of my birds. I have 16. This hen was acting normally, eating, drinking, moving around...

    Do you "free feed"?

What is considered best? Free feeding, by leaving your feeder full all of the time and the flock eats as they wish OR feeding at a specific time each day? I would like to free feed but do not want my birds to become too heavy to safely descend from their roosts. Opinions please...

    WHAT is happening here???

My 6 month old Polish rooster is lethargic and laying around disinterested. He is literally laying on the ground and he looks dead from a distance. If you approach him he will jump up and sqwauk, he will run from me or pitch a fit if I pick him up (normal behavior for him). He will the rejoin...

    Sick (?) rooster...please advise

This morning when I opened my coop and let out the flock, my White-Crested Black Polish roooster did not go to the feeders or interact with the other birds. He is standing still, head down, and does not respond to my calling. If I pick him up he will protest and make some noise, but when I set...

I have gotten a few in the past but I am not sure what "causes" this. Is there a way to encourage birds to lay double yolk eggs??
