Did I mess up my quarantine with antibiotic feed?

I purchased 5 turkey poults (from a couple of weeks old to a couple of days old) and 3 chicks (days old) from a local farm. They are in week 3 of quarantine from the rest of my flock. I ran out of my normal organic feed when my co-op cancelled a delivery. I accidentally purchased a game...

Pasturing in the orchard with electric net fence?

I'm going to pasture my young male chickens and perhaps our turkeys in our orchard. The orchard is surrounded by 10 foot posts with hex chicken wire and strand wire run through it to keep the deer out. This "fence" that previous owners built does not go entirely to the ground. It's approx 2...

Can you identify this bug? Possible grain mites- lost two chickens this summer.

I know it's not the greatest picture, but it has a several very thin legs coming out from the body. It reminds me a little of a spider. It's very light colored, kind of a straw colored- beige. This is big from what I understand most mites look like. This is about the 6th time I've found one...

    Rooster behavior- updated

I have a cockerel (18 weeks) that has gotten protective of the flock. I had to dust everyone for mites a few weeks ago. And since then this behavior has gotten worse. If I pick up a hen, he will peck the ground a few feet away, picking up random things like dry leaves that he's surely not...

    Recommend processing equipment?

Guess I'm getting two cones from here because of the price/free shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chicken-Duck-Poultry-Killing-Processing-Restraining-Cone-Funnel-/330811612491?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d05e89d4b What about your favorite knives, poultry shears or pruning shears?

    Heatstroke or something else?

I had a 14 week old cockerel Buckeye die this morning. He weighed 3 lbs 10 oz, the same as he weighed 2 weeks ago. When I let them out, he wanted to lay down in the feed shed. I scooted him out and saw he was walking very knock kneed. It was a very different gait than normal and he kept...

Ideas for a dual purpose coop, hopefully breeding too?

We're planning on building a 8 X 14 coop with an enclosed 17 X 14 run. They will free range/pasture as well. We have 21 Buckeye chicks right now, we'll probably keep 8 or so for layers. Eventually we might need a momma hen brooding area or a breeding pen and a place for the extra...

Bulknaturals and Azure Standard have organic/no soy feeds

Bulknaturals co-op just started carrying various livestock feed. They are all organic but some of the feeds are also available in no soy versions. Since I'm in TN the shipping/transport fee for my orders are only $5-6 (I'm not sure how they calculate it) for drop off locations. It's currently...

Are these two different breeds of chicks?

Do chicks vary in down color this much when they are the same breed? Is this normal or possible different breeds? I'm such a new chicken owner. lol I ordered all Buckeye chicks. They are approx 4-5 days old. Some are the red-brown and others are lighter yellow and there...

Is deep litter just for the coop? What do you put in the run?

I love the idea of deep litter to use as compost in my garden. My coop will be a dirt floor. But what do you put in the run if it's not 100% covered? Won't deep litter just become a soggy mess with rain? I'm considering sand for at least the run.

Converting just part of an existing outbuilding into a coop?

Anyone have any ideas on converting just part of an outbuilding into a coop? We're thinking of using the nearest end section of this building. That section currently doesn't have a door or any windows. Only a dirt floor. We would be storing a lawn mower and small tractor in the far two...

What should come first chicks or a puppy?

I've read that it's good to try to have the dog think that the chicks are part of his family. Does that mean we should get chicks first? Any thoughts on golden retrievers and chicks? I'm just a little hesitant about the breed since it's a bird dog.
