I was given 6 chickens from one of my buddies. 2 bantam hens and a rooster. 2 silver laced Wyandotte’s. 2 bantam hens and 1 silver died. I bought a rooster and 2 hens that are barred rocks from someone else. I have the bantam rooster away. Today, my wife text me and said the rooster was dead...
The chicken in the very back is a silver laced wyandotte. Can anyone identify, with any degree of certainty, what the others are? I was told, by the person I purchased them from, that they are doms. But they have a single comb, so someone else told me they are rocks. Doesn’t really matter, as...
I have a home built cooler incubator. My heat source is 2 light bulbs. I've been adjusting it to try to get the temperature right. My open air temperature ranges from 99.5 to 101. Starting at the low temp, the lights come on for 1 minute then kick off. The temp continues to climb slowly for 2...
I have a brooder box that's up off the ground and has a wire bottom. On the ground below are peanut hulls crushed up that make it through the wire, as well as, wasted feed and poop. I looked down tonight as I was feeding them and noticed the peanut hulls moving. I dug in them to find out why and...
I have 1 chick that's 3 weeks old. I just had 17 chicks hatch out last night. Is it ok to put them in the brooder together or should I move the older one somewhere else?
We just had our first pip. Bottom left egg. Probably wont be able to keep the stream going for the whole hatch but will keep it up as long as possible. Enjoy!

Today is day 16. My temps have stayed steady throughout the whole hatch. 102 air temp, 100 egg temp. This afternoon it read 102 air temp and 107 egg temp. I just candled and all are still alive. I'm hoping its just a thermometer glitch, but it still says 102 air and 107 egg. What should I do?
I set my first eggs a little over 1 month ago. My hatch rate was very unsuccessful. I set 29 eggs and had 4 hatch with only 1 survivor. For hatch #2, I upgraded my fan for better circulation and temperature control. I also bought an automatic egg turner and calibrated my thermometer/hygrometer...
Well, we're 1/3 of the way done with our second hatch! Things seem to be progressing nicely!!! Looks like 10/20 are progressing. Maybe more! I sure would love to have at least that many hatch! :)
Here's a couple videos of embryo movement.
Here goes round 2 of incubation. We got a better fan and an automatic egg turner. We also are a tad more educated. Hopefully we'll have a better outcome! Stay tuned in for another live stream when the first pip occurs.
I'm not sure of the appropriate thread for my question, but since it was food related, I figured I'd ask here.
My wife boiled 2 fresh eggs the other day. When she opened the first one, it was fine. The second one, however, looked like this:
Anyone have a clue as to what happened?
Just thought I'd give an update on my chicks. 2/4 died within 24 or so hours of hatching. Chicks 1 & 2 are doing great though! Here's some pics of them.
Any guesses on the breed? The eggs were given to me by a friend. Not sure what kind of chickens he has.
Also, I wanted to share an...
This is the thermometer/hygrometer that I used for my first incubation.

I set 29 eggs. 4/29 hatched. 2/4 had unabsorbed yolk sacks and died.
My goal is to learn something from each experience and produce the best...
9PM last night was the start of day 21. We candled the eggs on day 16 or 17 and all 7 eggs had live embryos. But day 20 has come and gone and still no pips visible. Is this normal?
Hello all! I started with 29 eggs. At day 17 I candled and removed the ones with no sign of life. I'm down to the final 7 and this is day 20. I don't see any pips yet, but hopefully I will soon. If you'd like to view my live feed, feel free. I plan to keep it going until after the hatch. If it...
