Hello everyone, this is my first time incubating. I've read you are not supposed to help but it's been 13 hours since the first pip to this. Doesn't look like much more is happening. I can hear the odd cheep but I think it's coming from another egg. The other one is like the koolaid man breaking...
Hello everyone,
I'm completely new to hatching eggs. I just put eggs in an incubator Friday and and everything was fine up to last night. When I woke up this morning (Sunday) the lid was partially off. It appears the arm which turns the eggs wasn't seated properly and pushed itself off the tray...
Good morning everyone,
Last night I saw one of my hens puffed up under the cedars near our house. She was awake but not moving around. Her wings were a little droopy. I picked her up and she didn't fuss too much, flapped her wings a little but that's it.
I looked it up online and one...
Hello,
I'm looking at building a coop and was considering using old pallets as a subfloor and screwing plywood on top. I figured this would make it easy to clean/shovel out when the time comes. Now after reading a number of posts I see it's more or less 50/50 when it comes to flooring. Some go...
Hi everyone,
So we just got our 4 hens back who were spending the winter with relatives (our coop isn't winterized yet). While our hens where there they also got a second rooster. Unfortunately this new rooster didn't get along with their "alpha" rooster and I ended up taking the new one home...
Good day everyone,
Been a while since I posted last but I'm back. After a successful season last year keeping 4 hens in a tractor, the wife and I would like to up the ante and have a year round coop and possibly more hens.
At first I was thinking of building from scratch however we do have a...
I switched my feeder to one of these http://www.tscstores.com/20-PLASTIC-YELLOW-FEEDER-P29011.aspx
It seems like they don't care for it as they hardly touched their food. Could it be they don't like the feeder and therefore are not eating?
So bear with me, I'm new, but why exactly is sleeping in the nest so bad? I see posts saying you'll get poopy eggs but is that the only issue? I ask because my 4 hens live in a chicken tractor and are all now laying consistently 3-4 eggs a day. They have a roost but choose to sleep in the nest...
This may be a crazy question but someone told me that if you hard boil fresh eggs the shell won't peel off easily. Is this true? This same person told me that you can eat farm eggs every day but can only eat store bought eggs twice a week. I say bull.
So I had my 4 hens for only 6 days and I got 2 eggs today! I guess I'm doing something right :)
It was interesting because I noticed an increase in water and feed consumption the day before. I also noticed that this morning was the first time they came to me. It was like someone flipped on the...
Does anyone have before and after laying pictures of their chickens' waddles and combs? I've looked through the posts but all the ones in the threads seem to have been removed. I'm new to all this and just trying to get an idea of what to look for when my hens are ready to lay.
Thanks
Hi Everyone,
So I finally got my 4 hens yesterday. I put them in the tractor and naturally they seemed nervous due to the new environment but in about 1/2 hour they were picking grass, drinking water and checking our the ramp to the coop. I left them alone and returned at night to close up the...
I'm getting 4 hens today and I'm curious what is the proper way to feed them. I've been told to provide enough feed for them to finish in a half hour. Can I not just put a bunch of feed out and let them eat as they please? They will be in a chicken tractor so they'll have grass/bugs/etc. as...
Hi everyone,
I searched the site and found different answers so I figured I'd ask using my specific scenario. (I'm a newbie, sorry)
I will have four, 20 week old hens (laying) in a chicken tractor. How much feed should I expect to go through in a month? I'm in Ontario so I imagine feed...
Hi everyone, I'm new to the whole raising chickens thing but I'm making my first tractor and I have 4 hens waiting to be picked up in a few weeks.
My tractor is an a frame style with a 6 x 8 base. The enclosed portion is elevated off the ground with an approximate base of 4x3. I'm curious how...
Hello everyone, first time posting here. So I finally did it and bought chickens. I'm starting small and just bought 4 laying lowmann hens. I'm curious to how should I bring them home? I don't have any crates but I was wondering if I rig 4 milk crates with lids...would this work? Too small? I'll...
