We hatched these four seven weeks ago. We got the eggs from a breeder who claimed the ones that hatched as a New Hampshire (brown one that looks like a pullet so far- 3rd photo) and the other three as Isa Brown crosses. The "Isa Brown crosses" don't look like they have much Isa Brown in them so...
Over the past year we've had 3 chickens die.
The first, a light sussex a bit under 30 weeks old, was found near a pile of rocks in the yard dead last summer (December).
9 weeks ago a mixed breed rooster about 12 weeks old was found near the same rock pile, also dead, just 15 minutes after...
We've just had two chicks hatch - one is not far off 48 hours, the other is about 3 hours old. When the second chick dried out we put it in the brooder and the older one, who has become extremely active, started pecking at it, and it looks quite rough. Is this normal...(older chick pictured below).

I'm probably worrying about nothing, but recently one of my ISA brown pullets has been acting a bit funny...
It keeps closing its eyes and dozing while still standing up (probably nothing unusual, although I did notice a similar thing in one of my LS pullets days before its died unexpectedly)...
I'm from Australia so unfortunately all these wonderful American hatcheries are good as useless to me....anyone know of any good hatcheries in Australia?
What is the best breed of chicken for a small egg-laying flock (9 hens and a rooster)?
I want a good layer for eggs to eat and eggs to incubate...what breed would you recommend for this?
We bought 7 Light Sussex chickens about 17 weeks ago. The person we bought it off claimed they were 15 weeks old, which means they are now around 32 weeks old! They still aren't laying, and to me they still look fairly young (although i'm definitely not an expert)...the sussex pictured is one of...
