    A boy and his chicken!

My three year old just LOVES our chickens! We have had them a year now and they are great. This is Daniel's favorite chicken. He named her "Cranie". And I don't know what that means! Hehe!

    My Chicken caught a mouse!

Who needs barn cats? One of our chickens caught a mouse today and was proud as can be, running around the yard with it! [/IMG]

    My Chickens won't come out!

Is this normal? We have 8 chickens. 4 of them are 8 months old and four are 1 1/2 years. They are all cold weather breeds (chosen with our Michigan winters in mind!). It's been really chilly this week and they have not come out of their coop, into their run, hardly at all! They may come out to...

    Winterizing our coop

We have eight hens. Their breeds were all chosen with cold weather in mind, so they are all supposed to be hearty for winter. We have a 16x12 run with an 8x5 coop. Right now, the coop does not have a roof, but it is under the roofed half of the run. The girls like to roost in the rafters, even...

What breed is this new hen?

I'm guessing EE, based in everything I've read here. We added four new girls to our little flock. The friends we got the hens from said they were told two of them are Isa Browns. But these hens don't look like isa browns to me. They look just like many ee pics I've seen. Or Americauna...still...

How long until new chickens start laying again?

We have four pullets that were hatched in April. We had a rooster that we had to cull because he was too aggressive with the chickens and the children. A few days later, we adopted four hens from some friends. They were laying already. We figured with the rooster newly gone and a new pecking...

Roo or Pullet? Silver Laced Wyandotte

I'd love some insight here! We already have one "Pullet" turned rooster in our little flock. Now I'm curious about a couple others! My EE Roo is only 8 weeks old and has been crowing for a week already! This chicken is 10 weeks old. Any guesses for me?

One of my 'girls' is a BOY! When should he be separated?

Our sweet chickies are now 7 weeks old (a couple are 9 weeks). One of my 7 week old EE chickens is crowing like crazy, has a bad attitude, is getting extra fancy feathers, and just looks 'different' from the others. So, I'm assuming she is acutally a HE! Ah, well. We don't want a rooster, as...

    9 week old 'pullet' crowing??

Do pullets/hens crow?? This is our first time with chickens and the oldest of our girls is about 9 weeks old. We heard one of our chickens crowing this morning! Not a full 'cockadoodledoo' but a crow anyway! We really hope she is not a HE! So my question is how common is it for girls to...

What do you think? Is this one a Rooster??

These 'girls' are about 8 weeks old. Their combs are different. They are both Silver Laced Wyandottes. One has a more spikey comb and one is more flat. Does this mean the spikey comb one could be a roo? The one on the left is the one in question....

Way too soon to tell if it's a Rooster?

We have some new chicks and two are a bit older than the other 5. These two are SilverWyandottes. They are probably about 3-4 weeks old. I bought them at the farm store, so I don't know. They were much bigger than my day old chickies, so I think they had at least a week or so on them...

    First Timer!

Hi there! I'm Rachel and I'm a first time chicken mama! :) We live in Michigan and we have four boys and we recently purchased some chicks for our backyard. We have 2 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 2 Buff Orpington, 1 Rhode Island Red, and 2 Easter Eggers. They are super cute - of course - and we...
