What breed of duckling do I have?

I bought some ducks from Tractor Supply but I am not 100% sure what kind they are. I think they are Khaki Campbell. But they could be Cayugas or runners or something else. The store said they didnt know but that they only buy from breeders so they are purebread. Any ideas? thanks, James

Mr chicken's injury. What is going on?

I must warn you that these pictures are quite graphic. I have a Gold Laced Wyandotte (Gemma) who started getting pecked, so we put some Rooster Booster lotion on to deter the other hens, but they carried on. Ironically, Gemma was always the big bully in the past, and now she is the victim...

    Chickens not started laying yet

Hi, Around Spring time we bought 4 hens from the Co-op (Australorps and Gold Laced Wyandottes), and they started laying 2 eggs a day pretty quickly. Then on May 21st, we got another batch of 30 hens from Murry McMurry. They are mostly Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (which all turned out to be...

Hen keeps flying over 7ft fence despite clipping her wing

Hi, I have a flock of about 30 hens (of many varieties). Our problem child of the flock, is of course a Silver Speckled Hamburg. She is a slender, flighty bird, with more of a pidgin shape than a fat hen, so she can fly very well. She kept flying out of our 7' tall pen and sleeping up a...

    Chickens not spreading out

Hi, I have a very large coop for my 25 birds. The have 2 floors and a LOT of space, but they all just want to squish each other in a corner of the coop, next to the door. My Silver Speckled Hamburg (Hamburger) just sits at the door on the top of the ladder, half in, half out. But all my...

    Ceramic pot eggs

Is it true that a pot egg will encourage a hen to lay? I heard that hens like to lay a certain number of eggs before they sit on them, and so having a pot egg out or leaving their own egg there a bit longer will encourage them to lay more. Is this true? Is a golf ball just as good as a pot...

    Gold lacd wyandotte question

Hi, I have 2x 19 week old gold laced wyandottes amongst my flock of 25. I think they are both laying, but its hard to tell who the eggs are coming from, but we've only been getting eggs for a week now and they are still small. One of the glw hens has a big comb that flops over, but the other...

Hatching eggs the old fashioned way

Hello My male pekin has been humping one of my female mallards. If I let them sit on the eggs, is it likely to hatch and turn into a duckling? Also I have chickens in with them (just hens). How do chickens do with ducklings? Would they be mean to them? If I can get more than a couple of...

    Nesting box advise

Hi I have a run thats 24'x16', and a coop thats 8x16 (but its 2-stories high so its really 8x16 + 8x16, with an internall ladder between floors). The top floor of the coop is just for chilling in with a perching pole, and the bottom floor has some nesting boxes all along the length as well as...

    Are these chickens roosters?

Hi, I have 2 silver laced and 3 gold laced wyandottes. They were all supposed to be pullets, but both silvers and one gold have grown a LOT bigger, one of the silvers crows, and they fight when they are together. Please could anyone help confirm whether these are definitely cockerals or...

    Building on a slope

Hi, I am building a chicken run that is 16x24. ( comprised of 3x2 8ft panels) The problem is the 16' sides have to go on a slope that is 2' per 16'. So here are my options: - Use a tiller to flatten the earth, meaning a lot of work and a 2' retaining wall/steeper slope required. - Have...

    Lamp temperature for chicks

Hi, I have raised many chicks before, but usually only a few at a time. Today I just received an order of 20 chicks from mcmurrys, and was wondering if I need to turn my lamp temperature down (i.e. move it further away) since there is more body heat from so many chicks? They shipped...
