    Culling and sexing

Hello, I have been raising Coturnix quail for the past 2 yrs and enjoying it. I generally cull during spring/ summer however this year I let it get away from me and now I have too many birds. I do not like culling females and I am trying to avoid that. Last 2 sessions I sat outside the cage and...

Purchased 1/2 dozen chicks from TSC the other day. Labeled as New Hampshire, but feathering is not looking right for that breed. Any ideas?

Royal Palm Hen laying too soon

Relatively new with Turkeys. I bought some Royal Palm poults this past spring, ended up with three Toms and one Hen. I ate two Toms so now I have a breeding pair. I assumed I wouldn’t be seeing any eggs until spring 2019, but I went to collect eggs today and in the back corner of the chicken...

    BBB vent pecking

Hi all, First time raising Turkeys... One of my BBB's has developed a nasty habit of vent pecking. I only have 3 and 2 are running scared. I just put them in a larger cage and raised my heat lamp to cool the temps. I am biying higher protein feed tonight and added a roost and threw in some...

    Marans breeding question

I have one black copper hen that has been Mareks stricken on and off since she was a pullet. I have nursed her back to health several times in the past two years, but she no longer lays. I wanted to breed her with my black copper Rooster, but I don't think she will bounce back this time. So I...

    Chalky eggs

My Black Copper keeps laying these chalky shelled eggs. The shell itself is strong and the egg appears fine otherwise. Normally she lays beautiful dark eggs, but lately she is laying these ugly things. The shell texture makes my skin crawl when I touch it. Any idea what's up?

    Washing fertilized eggs

We had a broody hen and decided to put some eggs under her. Somewhere along the way one of the eggs cracked so we put some frog tape on it. A week later we find the egg smashed on the bottom of the coop and it smelt foul. Upon further inspection it appears it was crushed in the nest and then...

    Fragile Marans

I am having a rough go with Marans. Specifically the Black Coppers. I had a batch of 10 about 8 months ago that came down with Mareks. All the classic symtoms, eye color change, paralysis yet the continued to drink and eat as long as I fed and watered them by hand. I saved four and the rest...

    Shipping loss

I ordered 22 chickens and received 6 live. This is the second time this has happened in the past year It's getting very annoying. Nothing makes me more sick to bury little lifeless Silkies and Black Copper Marans. Does this happen often? Or am I just unlucky? Ron

Pendulous Crop or As if it couldn't get worse...

Hello all, I am new to Marans and have had a heck of a time with them thus far. About a year ago I purchased about 20 Marans of various varieties and practically lost the entire flock to a mystery disease at about 3 weeks of age. I ended up with a Blue, Blue Splash and a Cuckoo Marans when it...

    Silkie mom attacking her chicks

Hello all, New to the forum! Not new to keeping chickens, but I have never had a hen raise her own chicks. We have a Silkie that has 4 chicks that are almost 6 weeks old. Silkie was a great mom up until a few days ago. She has started to peck and chase off her chicks whenever they come close...
