    Hens Sleeping

I have never seen my hens sleep. When they were chicks, I'd see them fall asleep all the time. Now, I try sneaking up on them in the coop, at various times, and their eyes are always open. Has anyone else noticed this?

Easter Egger cockerel free Southern California.

I adopted this Easter Egger hoping she'd be a pullet, turns out she's a he. Free or swap with a hen or pullet. I'm in Huntington Beach, Ca.

What is this white stuff on my hen's face?

This is Cutie, I think she is 2 years old. I adopted her from my local animal shelter a year ago. She has been a great hen that lays eggs regularly. She is a heavy breed, I think a Barnevelder, that eats all the time!!! I've checked her for mites and lice and didn't find any. Every once...

    Help! Broody BO Hen

I have a broody Buff Orphington hen who is almost 1 year old. She's been broody for over 2 weeks now. Prior to this she was a good layer. She's taken permanent residence in one of the nesting boxes and won't let my other hens lay in any of the nesting boxes. As a result production is down. I...

    Spent grain

I just went to my local brewery and got a 5 gallon bucket of spent grain that they were going to throw away. My hens loved it! I'm going to keep doing this to lower my feed costs.

When roosting my hens hold one wing over the next hen...

When roosting I have seen my hens open up one wing and hold it over the hen next to them. It looks like a hug or they are keeping each other warm, we are in Southern California it's not cold. I'm not sure what they are doing. Has anyone seen this behavior? I'll try to get a pic of them and...

    Help with my game hen

I have 4, 9 months old hens that I've had since they were chicks (RIR, buff Orphington, barred rock and Easter egger). They all get alone great and are great layers. I adopted a game hen and she's real sketchy, nervous and mean to my girls. I thought this would subside after awhile. I...

Should I wait to eat her eggs?

I adopted a game hen from our local animal shelter. She's secluded from the rest of my flock and she's already laying eggs, almost one a day. Should I wait to eat her eggs because she was a stray?

    Dutch Bantam??

We just adopted this hen from our local animal shelter. I think she's a Dutch Bantam. What do you all think? I've quarantined her from the rest of my flock. I've noticed some white stuff on her comb and wattles. I'm thinking of treating with athletes foot cream.

    Egg song

My 5 month old buff Orphington started singing the eggs song today! The other hens were just looking at her with the funniest look. I looked in their coop and all around the backyard but didn't find a egg anywhere. Hopefully she'll lay soon!

    I love this site!

I'm really learning a lot from this site. I think I'm on here everyday, reading posts, looking at pics of coops and browsing around. I have 4 chickens, a RIR, EE, Barred Rock and a Buff Orphington. I'm learning a lot from this site and my 3 year old son loves the chickens too. We got them...

    Grub worms for chickens?

I have four 14 week old hens. I compost and have noticed white grub worms in my compost bin as well as the normal red worms. I often open the door to the composter when I let my hens out to free range. Here's my question, is it ok for the hens to eat the grub worms? They love them! When they...

    Is this a Roo?

Can anyone tell if my chicken, on the left, in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pic is a rooster? I think they are all hens but one of them worries me. This is my first flock and I'm thinking of getting two more since my city allows for up to six hens. They are around 11 weeks old now. Sorry the pics...
