Never seen an egg like this before!

Our easter egger gave up this treasure yesterday morning. WOW! Mother Nature can be so awesome sometimes :)

My juvenile hens are not roosting

I have 6 pullets with 2 of them being 9 weeks old and 4 that are 7 weeks old. They have yet to migrate to their roost area. They huddle in one corner of the coop and sleep as clutch on the floor. Will they start using the roost soon? I have a ramp built and the two oldest ones can fly up to...

Put Black Jack 57 on coop floor yesterday

It was tough to mix with a paint mixer on my drill but I got it mixed pretty well. It really clings to the walls of the bucket and I had to really take my time to get it all off the sides during the process. Poured it out in puddles on the floor and them rolled into out. I went out this...

    Is she a Speckled Sussex?

I got two chicks that were supposed to be Speckled Sussex, but I am starting to wonder now. Does she look like a Speckled Sussex chick?

Converting an older shed I built into our new coop

I have a really well built 10x12 building that I built over 20 years ago, that just doesn't have much use these days. I figured it would make a nice coop with a few upgrades like some windows and divide the supply room/egg retrieval area from the coop. I am adding on a small covered run of...

    Our first chicks

We picked up 6 chicks tonight to start our chicken adventure. 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Australorps and 2 Barred Rocks. The 2 Speckled Sussex are about 4 weeks old and the rest are about one week old. I am not sure that we actually got Barred Rocks though as the 4 smaller chicks look identical and...

Starting a new flock with chickens that are already laying?

I hear many people talk about buying egg layers to start their flocks and then there is a long delay before they start laying again. Is there a general rule of thumb about how long it takes these birds to get comfortable enough to begin laying again after being moved to a new environment?

    Non GMO vs Organic feeds

I am just starting out with chickens and we want to provide good food for our small flock. The Organic feeds tend to be pretty pricey vs. the Non GMO feeds(but not certified Organic). As we are in north Texas, local feeds are the better value for us. Texas Natural Feed has a Non-GMO layer...

    Roost layout question

OK I am debating whether to make a roost rack with two roost bars spaced 12" apart at the same height or would it better to stagger the height with the higher one in back (12" difference in height, 12" spacing between the bars front to back). Is 12" apart enough space between them to hopefully...

Coops -Can I have too much space?

I have been racking my brain and pouring over many designs for a coop build. While I was out in the yard my bride asked me why I was not going to use our 10'x12' utility shed with 8' ceiling height that I built 20 years ago. We really don't use it for anything anymore after I built the Garage...

Goods breeds to try together for our first flock?

I am finalizing the breeds that I wan to start our urban farm with and wanted to make sure that these breeds have a similar temperament. I am looking at adding Wyandottes, Brahmas and Sussexs. What do think if I start them all as chicks? No rooster as part of this flock. Looking at approx 10...

How much more work is 10 hen vs say 5 hens?

I am trying to decide just how many hens to start off with for our backyard farm. We have plenty of room (on an acre). I have a nice shaded spot that has some sun too. I can make a run that could be as big as 12x24 without too much issue. We have a storage shed that I will re-purpose a...

Run size and ability to keep some grass

I am trying to decide how large of a run I will need to keep 5 large hens in and hopefully maintain some amount of grass. I have 15 x10 area that I can enclose and could go up to 15x15. Is there any chance that this amount of space (plus the 50 ft in the main coop area of my Wichita style...

    Height under coop?

I am planning my new (and first) chicken coop and run. It is based upon the Wichita style coop, but I am going to make it a little bigger overall. I was curious what would you all consider to be a good height for the area directly under the coop? I was thinking 18" would be enough. but then I...

Chicken roost spacing from back wall

Ok I am working on my coop design and I was wondering what you all consider to be a good distance from the roost itself to the wall behind it? I don't want to waste space, but I don't want the birds to feel like it is too close to the back wall either. I was thinking of 36" off the floor of...

    Just getting started...

Would we be better off with one of each breed or pairs(or more of the breeds we want). I don't think that we will maintain more than 6-8 birds (if that) as we are in an urban setting. We live in north Texas so the breeds have to be heat tolerant too.
