The other day, we found a adolescent snake (about 15") right at our front door. I guess it was homeless and needed shelter or something.
From my research it looks like a Pacific Gopher Snake and people keep them as pets.
We are thinking about keeping it as pet.
So far we have it (we think...
Permits to raise chickens. I wonder if the Chicken Police will come down hard on you if you are illegal. CSI-Sacramento.

I have a New Hampshire Red who is only one year old. She stopped laying eggs about Oct, 2010. To date, she has not laid another egg.
There does not appear to be anything physically wrong with her, she eats alright and acts like a normal chicken. It is near the 6 months point of no egg...
So we were out of town a few days.
We returned, we found one chicken who managed to wedge her head between the fence and a hen house post. Needless to say she died.
I just have to wonder, did the chicken ever considered pulling her head backward and thus freeing herself? Instead, it looked...
I recently noticed that rats have been getting into my coop. At first it was a few droppings but then I noticed my feed has been disappearing rather quickly. So then of course it means RATS, not just one rat.
I put out a rat trap (snap trap type) and that for 4 straight nights I have have...
Another law with good intentions which will do nothing much but make egg producers move away from California.

I guess it will only help the back yard chickens owners. Locally grown.
I am curious. At what sustained temperatures and lighting will impact the ability of a hen to lay eggs? Does it depend on breed?
Daily temps are about 45 - 50 degree with about 10 hours of light per day now.
I have 2 NH Reds and 1 Astralorp which started laying about 2 weeks ago and have been...
I have a New Hampshire Red which is about 4 months old. This morning, I find her scratching at wooden barked area, seemingly making a nest. I have a coop with a hen box for them to lay eggs. So far the other hens who have started laying eggs have laid their eggs in the hen box. I quickly covered...
My hen (Astralorp) started laying yesterday after 28 weeks (I was getting worried).
Today, she laid an egg in the morning and then less than 8 hours later, she laid another egg. Is that normal for a new egg layer?
Or did a new hen started laying? Only other brown egg layers are two 21 weeks NH...
I have 7 hens. 2 of them are about 7 months and the other 5 are about 4 months old.
I am a little bit concerned about the two 7 month old hens because they have yet to lay any eggs.
The breeds are Astrolorpe and Americauna.
I spoke to my neighbor who have raised chickens and she said...
I recently had my chicken come of age enough to jump over a fence in my backyard and onto the bushes on the street side of the neighborhood. Yes their wings were clipped. After 2 weeks of occasionally seeing them strut around and unable to catch them. They miraculously showed up my front lawn...
I am building my chicken in area area where there is wood chips/bark ground covering. Would there be any harm to the chicks if the ground covering was of bark?
I would hate to pull up the ground covering to leave the exposed clay. I would hate to deal with the dust during the summer and mud...
