Wood Bark ground cover

I am building my chicken in area area where there is wood chips/bark ground covering. Would there be any harm to the chicks if the ground covering was of bark?

I would hate to pull up the ground covering to leave the exposed clay. I would hate to deal with the dust during the summer and mud during the winter.

I've no personal experience with this in the coop but use it in my gardens. It's not really absorbent so I would worry about it's usefulness in the run.
