NH Red looks like she is making a nest

I have a New Hampshire Red which is about 4 months old. This morning, I find her scratching at wooden barked area, seemingly making a nest. I have a coop with a hen box for them to lay eggs. So far the other hens who have started laying eggs have laid their eggs in the hen box. I quickly covered the nesting area in hopes to discourage her from building a nest there.

If she was indeed building a nest, how do I discourage her from laying out in the open and start laying eggs where I want her to?

Thanks!

PS. And as a City Boy, raising chickens is way cool.

you can put golfballs in the nest you want her to lay in, and then she'll lay in there soon enough. If she lays in the nest she's making, just take it out like a normal egg. It's just an egg.

cool thanks!

I just took a nice walk around the perimeter of the local golf course down the block and picked up 4 golf balls. No sense to buying when you can recycle. I figure no one will be looking for their missing golf ball after closing.

I just have to wonder, will the chickens now lay eggs with a Nike swoosh?
