    Duck with injured wing

I have a young muscovey with an injured wing. The end of it sticks out at an odd angle and the quills look pink and inflamed. No blood or obvious broken bones. It just looks infected. Does anyone have any advice for treatment, or suggestions for what might be wrong?

    Lame cockerel, no swelling

Hi, I have a leghorn cockerel that is suddenly lame. Yesterday I noticed him limping, but couldn't catch him. Today he practically fell out the coop door and I picked him right up. His right foot seems pretty nerveless and won't lie flat on the ground when he tries to walk. It won't support...

    Sick keet :(

I have a two day old keet who is suddenly very listless and wobbly. When she poops it dangles from her bottom and is clear and viscous like...snot (sorry). She's the only one of 18 with this problem. Any idea what could be going on? Is there anything I can do?

pips! but not due till Friday! Help!

I was planning to put my guinea eggs into lockdown tomorrow since they are due Friday. I looked earlier and noticed a crack in one. I thought it was possibly a fluke but called the lady I bought them from to ask if it could really be a pip since it's straight and not circular like a chicken...

    1588 battery backup?

I'm about to start setting some guinea eggs in my incubator, my second hatch ever. We're leaving on vacation next week for ten days. My pet sitter is going to be watching the water level and such, but I don't want to have to worry about a power outage while I'm gone. I thought the hovobator...

    Dog fight :(

I was just outside playing with my one year old son when my red heeler, Luna, started crying like she was hurt. I ran over and saw that somehow a loose wire from the old fence surrounding our property had gotten caught under her lower eyelid and she couldn't get away. My smaller blue heeler...

Pasty butt but in with mama!

Hi, I have a mama hen with 20 babies. All have been healthy until now. They're almost a week old and my favorite little guy has pasty butt. What can I do for him and what can I do to prevent others from getting it?

chicken hoophou *cough* bomb shelter *cough*

My husband is a dear and patient and helpful man. I asked for a hoop house made out of cattle panels that I could move around our yard so the chickies could eat pasture, have great ventilation, and still be protected from hawks. I told him the moving of it would help protect the hens from...

Moving broody hen on day 19?

I have a broody setting 7 eggs on a shelf. I just moved the other chickens to a new coop this morning to give her and her future babies (the seven under her and hopefully the ones from my bator) some privacy and now I'm wondering what to do about the fact that she's sitting up on a shelf and...

    Genesis 1588--humidity problem

Last night was lockdown for my first hatch in my Genesis 1588. I filled the second trough with water but according to the little hygrometer I have in there the humidity hasn't gone up all that much--maybe to 58? Am I doing something wrong? Help!

    Silly questions--may be ongoing...

So, I'm hatching eggs for the first time over here and I have a few questions. 7 of the eggs are under a broody hen and 21 are in the incubator. I'm setting up a brooder, but I'm questioning *where* to set it up. I've heard there is an incomparable smell to the brooder and so I'm wondering...

How many babies can one mama handle?

I have 7 eggs under a broody hen and 21 in an incubator all set to hatch at the same time (all in the incubator are growing--haven't candled the ones in the coop). In an ideal world I could give all the chicks to her after they hatch, but that's probably too much for a first time mama hen...

    What would you do?

Well, I'm sure I have a broody hen in my small coop. I made her a cardboard nest box with golf balls in it and moved her onto it last night. This morning she was still there and I thought I could slip the eggs under her this evening and all would be good. I was also going to start some eggs...

    incubator tips for 1588?

I'm just setting up my new incubator tonight, to start eggs in the morning. It's my first time ever attempting to incubate eggs and I'm using a Hovabator 1588 Genesis. I know I've read on here that a few people have made modifications to be able to add water without opening the lid, etc. Can...

Help me finish my guinea coop, please

Hi, I was given a free chicken coop in a roundabout way and I'm trying to convert it for use with guineas. It was in pretty rough shape and not at all secure from predators, but with a bit of work I think it will be great. The body is pretty solid anyway. Here are some pictures of how it...

    Well ventilated, but draft free?

What does this mean? How do you ventilate something well but eliminate drafts when it's an outdoor critter house? I see this over and over in everything I read, but it makes absolutely no sense to me. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    Um...who laid that?

So how do you tell who's laying the eggs you're gathering? I've heard more than once "an egg a day keeps the hatchet away", but how would someone go about telling which hen deserves the hatchet? Not that any of mine are heading in that direction, but I have no idea which of them laid which...

    Is she broody?

This is the second day I've found one of my hens sitting on the favored laying spot in my small coop. She has definitely rolled the eggs under her and is laying on them. I just can't tell if she's trying to lay one herself or hatch the ones already there. I'm quite a new chicken owner. one...

    way too soon :(

This morning I had six chickens. Now I have five. I went out this morning to let them out of their coop, but first I moved their small run aside and shoveled the snow out of it so they'd come out since they've been avoiding it. I put the run back and opened the door, but I forgot to replace...
