First timer with goslings on the way

I have ducks, chickens, and quail. I just ordered hatchery choice goslings along with some ducks. What should I prepare for? How do they differ from their poultry counterparts? What advice would you give to a new mom (of geese)? LOL! Thanks for your input! Im so excited to get these babies it's...

    All about packing peanuts

Anyone care to share what they've received as extras or packing peanuts? From McMurray, I ordered four different sets of heavy layers and got a dozen RSL roos. From cackle, I ordered a duck assortment and received one extra duck. From Ideal I ordered several rare breed chicks (silkies and...

    Help select pigeon enclosure!

I am trying to find a reasonably priced dog kennel with cover to house 12 breeding pairs of pigeons. What would you suggest? I was thinking that 5 by 5 and 6 feet high would be too small. Any other ideas? I was looking at something like this (I would have to predator proof the top) but I didnt...

Troubleshooting: Why aren't my hens laying anymore?

I have a handful of red stars from the year before last. I have a black star and an orpington around the same age. I also have chicks I got in february. Then I have two batches that I hatched, myself, since then. Three other people got some of the chicks I got in february, and theirs are all...

    Sexing ducks by head?

I was just looking at my ducks (I have five pekins and two khaki campbell) and I noticed that some of them had larger head/neck. They look like the curve of their neck where it meets the head stands up noticeably further than the others. You can see it really easily when looking at them from the...

Pipping wrong end but still hatching successfully

Every batch of chicks I've had a handful pip entirely in the wrong spot. And they still hatch just fine. Last batch, I had one zip that NEVER pipped at all. I can confirm from hatch debris that one from last night's hatch never pipped the air cell, it just pipped the small end and the zipped...

    Processing Ducks...?

I weeded out my less favorable parts of my flock and that included a khaki campbell and a white pekin duck. I've only done chickens before, so I'm unfamiliar with butchering ducks. I noticed that the ducks smelled really bad inside. I have noticed that chickens tend to have that dirty animal...

Lost about half my meaties in a week....??

I am having SERIOUS issues with my meat birds. I ordered the cockerel package from Cackle and ended up with 100 of mostly orps, RIR, various production red breeds, and barred rocks. They are about 5 weeks and were outgrowing their brooder, so I put them outside. THey are feathered out ( I...

    Quick question about cockerel packages~

There is a lot of talk about ordering so many pullets and a few of them turn out to be cockerels. I ordered a cockerel package of 100 heavy breed cockerels - I got a fair balance of barred rock, some type of production red, and buff orps. So how many PULLETS do you usually end up with in a...

    bow legged duck ??

I have ducklings from Cackle that are 3 weeks old. They are on flock raiser, but one of them seems to be getting bow legged. I am guessing this is a niacin issue? What can I do about it? I don't really have any way to get anything....I have niacin tablets and vitamin b. Which do I use, and how...

    Brooding Ducks Ideas

I tried washable pee pads, towels, blankets... I don't want to do straw cause it's humid and I don't want mold. It seems like no matter what I do I am cleaning up a MASSIVE wet mess. Anything I can put in the brooder to at least minimize the mess? Right now the brooder is a wooden box lined with...

    The "Too Many Chicks!" Thread

We started out with an order of 25 assorted chicks. That first year, I snagged a few from the feed store, hatched some, bought some full grown - we were immensely outnumbered. This year, we ordered 100 cockerels for meat, a Cackle Hatchery surprise (around 50 chicks), and an order of 15 ducks...

    BSL egg eater?

My one BSL started laying today finally. Well, I didn't catch her in the box, but coming out she was making a hoot and a holler so I went in excitedly to find that she had torn up four different nest boxes and in the fourth, an broken yolk and white. The shell was on the ground in front of the...

I am thinking they look fertile to me, unless I am misunderstanding how to tell the difference. Thanks for looking :) Ignore the weird reflections...it's really bright in my kitchen today :P

Questions about first eggs/chickens new to laying

I got my first chickens last spring and I noticed they are just now starting to act funny (like, making funny noises, laying down in strange places, and...being mated by my roo....lol) Well, today my daughter found an egg under a chicken that was laying in the empty kindling box on my porch...
