    Suspected paralysis from vitamin deficiency

We have started treating with Nutrional Yeast, Rooster Booster, egg and Poultry Cell. One leg has curled toes and is mostly paralyzed. We’ve ruled out mareks. During treatment, do we need to keep her isolated in this tiny crate? I have a larger dog crate in the chicken run and am wondering if I...

    Cocci, Coryza or worse?

I recently integrated two flocks after a quarantine period of many weeks. After the first day one of the new girls had a foamy eye with swelling. I treated her with terramyacin and she recovered completely after 2 days. A couple days later an older (original flock) girl had what appeared to be a...

    Eye injury, infection or tumor?

Her eye was squinty when we adopted her about a week ago. I’ve been flushing it out with saline, using colloidal silver and a bit of terramyacin. Any idea what that yellow ball in her eye might be? Here’s a picture from when we first started treating her eye a week ago. There was also some...

Hen has swollen, infected eye. Help!

She is 4 months old eating and drinking normally. She has no respiratory distress symptoms. No discharge. I was able to get some solid white stuff out today. There appears to a bump/growth of some kind. Her other eye is perfectly normal. Thoughts? I tried rubbing gently with Vet RX and a bit of...

    Gold Star a cockerel?

I was pretty frustrated when two out of four EEs ended up being boys. One was DOA so not sure if that one was also boy.To have a sex link Gold Star chick turn out to be a cockerel is shocking. I don’t understand what has happened to Ideal Poultry. This Gold Star is about 8 weeks old.

    EE 7 week cockerels?

Can you guys confirm that Pepper here is a pullet? I was told Fluffy is a cockerel. I assume with the red on the back chances are likely next to nothing he/she is a pullet. There’s also a bit of red in the tail.😭

    Ideal Poultry EE chick coloring

It seems there is no way to know for sure how the adult EE coloring will turn out based on chick coloring and sure enough all three of these babies surprised me. 😂 Zilly Day 2: Zilly Week 7: Fluffy Day 2: Fluffy Week 7: Pepper Day 2: Pepper Week 7: (chick on the right)

    Rat proof feeder options.

The other night I found two large, glossy coated rats enjoying our expensive organic chicken feed. I’d estimate rats have been eating almost half of our feed. After researching treadle feeders, it seems like the Ratproof feeder would be a great option. Unfortunately, I have two hens (brabanter...

Chicken randomly blind in one eye or marek’s?

I noticed this young hen (8 months old) had a cloudy pupil when you shine a light toward her. She originally hatched from a shipped egg. I’m not sure if she was hatched this way or if it is some kind of sickness? That pupil does not dilate. Her other eye appears to be normal. Am I dealing with...

    Bumblefoot not healing. 😔

She’s had one round of oxytetracycline. I removed one large kernel on 9/12. I could not find any other kernels though did remove some stringy bits today and last week. The swelling is not going down, which makes me think something is still in there. Someone advised me to cut her foot and try to...

    Bumblefoot looking severe. Please help.

My hen was bitten by a Texas rate snake last week and this week she has a nasty case of bumblefoot. Not sure if it’s related to the snake bite on her leg. This is the first time I’ve dealt with bumble foot so feeling overwhelmed. I was told to NOT treat surgically, but to use Prid and wrap daily...

Updated pics. 14 week old Spitzhauben boy(?) with wild hairdo.

This has been the most difficult chick to figure out gender. Fourteen weeks and no crowing yet, but we have quite the fancy hairdo going on. Thoughts? I was hoping by 14 weeks, I would know for certain boy or girl. I’m still unsure. 🥴

Is this 14 week old EE a boy? Say it ain’t so! 😅

I know all feathering patterns point to cockerel. Any chance it might be a pullet? Should we just accept that this is indeed a boy. No crowing yet. We dearly love this chicken, but can’t keep roos.🤦🏻‍♀️

Suspicious looking Spitzhauben "hen" 12 weeks old

We thought we had a pullet, but now I am second guessing. I think I see narrow saddle feathers? Sadly, we're not allowed to have roos so need to figure out if this she is actually a he.😅 Thoughts?

    Brahma mix?

“Pepper” is 9 weeks old. I thought she was a hen, but her coloring looks more like a dark Brahma rooster? Does the pattern vary for dark Brahma hens or perhaps she’s a mix. She came from a rainbow mix set of hatching eggs.

    Sudden Cannibalism

I have 19 6-7 week old chicks. Two chicks were aggressively feather picking and we removed them to a separate area a couple weeks ago. Everything has been fine since and everyone healed up nicely. The 17chicks are outdoors in a very large run area during the day and at night enclosed in a...

    Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben pullet?

I’m hoping this is a pullet. Any way to tell with this breed at this age? Wattles look very pale. She hatched from a shipped egg and is 5 weeks old.

    Crested Cream Legbar cockerel?

5 week old chick, which hatched from a shipped egg. Even though this breed is autosexing, we may have got it wrong. Kids have named him Washington. Could Washington actually be a pullet? 😂 A couple days old here:

    Boys? 3.5 week old chicks.

These hatched from a barnyard mix. Too young to tell sex? The first one one seems very “protective.” The other two are more calm. Second set (black chick) of pics might be too blurry. I’ll try to get better ones tmrw of him/her. Number 1: Number 2: Number 3:
