I havn't been on here in a long time. Mainly b/c things have been going quite well. We have six RSL's and they have not given us two much trouble. They are just over a year old all hens. My wife noticed over the past couple days that they seem to be picking on the smallest one. They are literaly...
We got our first egg today. Wasn't expexting it until next month. Guess I'm building nesting boxes tonight. Do I need to put something in the bottom of them? Like straw? I'm thinking about using two milk crates turned on their side.
Our 6 hens are about 10 weeks old. we are still feeding them the grower food from TSC. when do we switch to the layer feed? Can they have scratch? Is grit something they need? or does it just depend on what they are being fed. The only treats we give them are crackers, graham crackers and greens...
O.K. I didn't know if I should post this here or in the coop design section. I am confused about nesting box. I have 6 hens. I have their coop and run built and they are in it now. I need to get busy and build the nesting box. I read somewhere on BYC that for each four chickens you need 1 box. ...
Our chicks are two weeks old and occasionaly will get aggressive w/ each other, pecking and chasing each other. Is this normal?
Also an unrelated question. How cold does it have to get befor the hens will stop laying? How warm does it have to be, in the coop, for them over the winter months?
What's the easiest way to clean up their poop out of their cage? I've cleaned the cage completely out, and they're going more than before, how can I clean it a little easier than with toilet paper? Any suggestion's?
Our chicks are only seven days old and they are cimbing, no flying up ontop of the feeder jar and then flying off. Yesterday my daughters left the cage door open on accident and they all perched themselves on the edge of the doorframe to the cage. Raising chickens 101 says 1 month for a low...
I know it dosn't sound like a major issue, but I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to keep the chicks from kicking littter into their water. We are cleaning it out hourly.
Ok. we just brought our six little ones home today and we are new to this. They all are doing fine except for one. She seems to be tired. Just lays there. Occasionally gets up and moves around. Then just lays back down. The others have not done this at all. once they warmed up they have not...
I don't know how it got to this point, but we are going to go get chickens tomarow. I know the whole thing was my idea, but I thought my wife would stop me by now. Seriously, we are excited. I think it's going to be fun, and BYC has been a great resource. I'll be back with more ?'s. I'm sure.
