Trying to find a new home for me and my husband's beloved pet quail, Lil' Lady and Tuft, as we're moving internationally in early January.
Both are fairly good natured and quiet, and Lil' Lady lays an egg every other day. Tuft is smaller than Lil' Lady, and has had problems in the past with...
This is Tuft. He's a little over a year old.
Much like his name suggests, he has a weird tuft-like growth on one side of his head. Because of that, his different coloring from his flockmates (1 male, 2 females), and his significantly smaller size, he used to get bullied quite a bit. To combat...
Hey all,
Our 1-year old welsummer hen has started acting sluggish and lethargic over the past 2-3 days. Upon examination, we found that her abdomen was swollen and significantly hotter than that of our other five hens. She's also extremely thin, with her keelbone being very prominent. (All of...
It's been a few years since I posted on BYC so bear with me if I should be posting this in the quail category rather than this one.
I got a flock of 8 Coturnix quail from a fella 10 days ago. They've been in quarantine away from our chickens since they got to our home, and in a secure, unlit...
We had a house fire in late October, so we've had to relocate to a house about half an hour away from our farm. This week has been bitterly cold (anywhere from ~-25 to ~-40 Celcius), and the coop is not heated. Because we cannot be at the farm constantly, they do not have constant access to...
Hi,
I went to let out my chickens and turkeys out when I found one of my turkeys lying on the ground. At first, I thought it was dead, but when I got closer, I found that it was breathing shallowly. I cleaned the visible wounds out with warm water, but as I started to clean around the eyes, I...
Hello!
So, I bought duck (Rouen, I think) hatching eggs and just stuck them in my incubator yesterday. Are the heat and humidity levels the same as chickens? When should I put them on lockdown? If you have any advise regarding hatching ducks, I'd appreciate the knowledge.
My day old hatchling has a red, swollen hock and can't walk. It's hock resting a lot, and the leg with the swollen hock is kind of splayed out to the side. The other leg is fine. I don't know how soon after hatch it began.
Any ideas?
Hello,
Within 24 hours my entire chicken flock (16 adults, 5 chicks) has started gasping, wheezing, and coughing. There is no nasal discharge and and they do not seem droopy. I have not cleaned out my chicken coop in awhile, so maybe that's why?
We had a single chicken coughing about two months...
Hey all.
My hen went broody on a double yolker two weeks ago. Today I did my final candle and one of the chicks is developing normally, while the other is just a yolk. Not sure what to do... really want this chick alive. Has anyone had this happen before? Will post pics soon.
Hello!
I've never incubated before, and I want to learn. I don't know how to identify if an egg is fertilized. I have two fertile roosters with the hens 24/7.... Should I just assume all my eggs are fertilized?
Thanks in advance.
Well, after a secure 10 years, our coop finally has pests. :/ I think they've tunneled all underneath our coop floor (Wood). It's really snowy, and I really don't want to rip it up...
Has anyone dealt with voles before? Any tips? Trap plans?
Not sure if this should go under gardening or ducks... welp...
Anywhoos, I'm considering getting some ducks for a duckponic system, but I'm really not sure if it'll work or not. Any seasoned duckponic-ers out there? Opinions on breeds, systems, and layouts? Will a miniature garden pond work...
I want to buy some goats soon, but I was concerned about my backyard chickens? Will my roosters attack the goats? Will the goats attack the chickens?
Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
I've been rasing chickens for nigh on ten years now, and was introduced to guinea fowl by one of my chicken buddies. I fell in love immediately. Now, I'm considering guineas as a sort of guardian for turkeys and chickens. Would that work? What else are guineas good for? Do they need separate...
A friend's 7-month old Welsumer hen seems to be exhibiting some, but not all of the symptoms of Chronic Respiratory Disease.
She seems lethargic, droopy, and her breathing sounds thicker than that of their healthy hens. One of her eyes is watering constantly, and both have semi-swollen rings...
Heyo.
I'm thinking about getting turkeys (Broad-breasted White???) this spring, (Turklings? Chicks?) and was wondering about any differences I should know about from meat chickens, which I have previously raised and eaten.
Some of my questions:
1- Do turkeys need separate housing from...
My white chantecler rooster mysteriously sustained a strange injury after an extremely cold spell (-25 to -30 Celsius). Our coop is not heated, but it is insulated. I'm worried it may be frostbite. He also lost a nail. None of my other chickens have injurys. Pictures below.
Plot
You are a normal chicken, You do normal stuff, But one day men take you away from your flock and put you in a factory farming unit, they give you strange grain, which enabels you to FLY. But first things first, you have got to escape the factory, with the help of other chickens of course...
