WE JUST GOT OUR FIRST EGG!!! WE JUST GOT OUR FIRST EGG!! No eggs @ 2 hours ago when we gave the ladies some treats but my son found it under the coop when he went to make sure the ladies were snug as a bug for the night!! They (5 girls) are 18.5 weeks!!! YIPPEEEEEEE!!!
Any suggestions for controlling odor from the chickens / coop? Anything to put down? I clean 2 - 3 Xweekly but still there seems to be a risidual odor. We have "suburban" chickens (in a very large enclosure though) and my concern is keeping the neighbors happy. Thanks in advance.
Any advice on chicken intro's? We started w/ 3 BO's, had to bring one back sadly b/c she turned out to be a he, and came home w/ another BO and an Araucana. All from the same original McMurray shipment so same age (@ 5/5 hatch date), but clearly split into 2 v. 2 right now in the run. Anyway to...
Is there a particular breed of rabbit that does well cohabitating w/ chickens? Obviously will have it's own hutch and/or burrow, but shared enclosure. We've previously had a Holland Lop, and we loved her, but not sure if she'd have been "hearty" enough to stay outside and hang w/ the ladies...
Any ideas as to breed / sex? Current Craigslist posting - someone bought for "fun" now doesn't want them, they are getting too big... They look "familiar" to me, possibly Araucana's and RIR, but I'm a novice at this... THANKS!!
I have heard varying opinions on light for egg production - is it more important to have light coming into the coop / nesting boxes, or is it overall light which is most beneficial? Thanks!
I have heard varying opinions as to light necessary for great egg production - is it overall amt of light per day, or light making it into the coop that's more important? Thanks!
Could someone please post some "standards" for Buff Orpingtons, I'm desparately trying to figure out if we have males or females. For example, do females in this breed have spurs? Thanks!
Our pullet that turned out to be a roo started crowing a few days ago - at 6:30am. This was his pattern for a few days and today he seems to be crowing like once an hour, four or five times in a row. What's "typical" crowing behavior? He's a Buff Orpington. Thanks!
We live in the Bay Area in CA so can do this, but are seriously thinking our coop floor will be chicken wire, and then the droppings will fall below and we'll be able to scoop them right into the compost. Have framed a 4X6 coop out, 3 nesting boxes, max 6 chickens. The enclosure / run has been...
Help! We purchased 3 Buff Orpington sexed pullets born early May, and for a bit one has looked very different, w/ jowls and pronounced head crown, deep red already. Today this "ladie" started to crow - a deep "roo-roo-roooooo" and w/ a full on stance, like stepping into it, craning the neck, etc...
