Hi all, my hen is having her first molt pretty bad, but seems her feathers on her neck are coming in.
The question is her behavior during this period. She periodically walks backwards and shakes her head, then goes about her day doing this quite often. She's eating and drinking well.
Has...
I posted awhile back, but couldn't find my thread, so again here it is.
All our hens molted way back in August. Two are 3 1/3 years old and four are two years. They have quit molting a month ago. We have put a light on in the early AM in coop and we got two eggs and were pretty happy, then...
Hi everyone,
I have six hens some age 3 some age 1 1/2. They all started molting at the same time. Now only one is molting. It's been over a month and the ones that are done molting are not laying eggs.
The food is the same, nothing different. I've given them extra protein and extra...
My six chickens all want to lay in one nest box. If it's occupied then they start crackling very loud, roam around in and out waiting for the last hen to get off.
Does anyone know why they all have to have the same box? We have four to choose from.
Thank you group.
I have 6 hens. One is broody and is in the favorite nesting box. We only get one or two eggs each day from the rest since she has become broody.
The others don't like her in their nest box which they usually all use. There has been no other changes in food, etc. Do you think this is the cause...
Hi all, I'm not sure I'm on the right thread, but here goes my question. Is it more healthy to eat fertile eggs versa non fertile?
And if so, why?
Thank you and if I'm on the wrong thread let me know.
Hi, I have 6 chickens all laying. My one Americana, age 1 1/2 stopped about three weeks ago laying. She was an every day layer. The chickens all get the same food, layer food, veggies and fruits plus oyster shells. She is not molting nor broody.
The only thing I can tell is she gets picked...
Hi all, 10 months ago a bear attacked the chicken coop, killing four of my chickens. One that was left lost her sister whom was bonded with.
We since have four more chickens and she's fine with them.
Since this attack she hasn't been herself as far as egg laying. She stopped laying eggs...
I have a 2 year old Australorp that suddenly is walking 50% of the time like she's on hot coals. Lifts her legs up high. She doesn't do this all the time, but I'm wondering what this is.
She's been broody twice for months and molted twice. She's just getting over the second molt. She...
A bear attacked my 6 chickens back in July, ate 4. Two were left. My BR, age almost 2, is still traumatized. She lost her sister and hasn't layed proper eggs since. Her eggs are soft shell and broken sometimes on the floor. She used to lay every day, now only about twice a week. Her diet is...
My husband wants to keep the light in the coop from 7Am to 11 Am . Reason, we have 4 newbies that will start laying in mid Dec. They are 5 months old and no signs of laying.
We're in Calif with the drought and have plenty of sunlight. He want's to get them going.
What is your take, please.
My chicken age 1 /2 yrs started molting. Now she lays soft or broken shell eggs about twice a week. I'm giving her extra calcium and vits to see if it improves.
Question: Is it because she's molting why her eggs are like this? Will she eventually stop laying all together while in full...
I have a regular camera and I post pictures on Picaso. I haven't been able to attach from this program to the blog. I followed the instructions they have on the forum, but it still didn't work.
Any ideas?
I have a regular camera that I can take pictures and put them on Picasa. I've tried to attach pictures to Backyard blogs, but nothing works as they have instructed on the frequently asked questions page.
I have google and use chrome browser if that makes any difference.
Any advice? Thank you
I'm not able to import or attach pictures from Picasa. On the questions and answers it said to go to reply and a colored icon will be at the top of the page, click on it and you will see browse to attach a picture. There was no icon and no browse.
Please advise, thank you.
I read in an article true Ameraucanas male or female have 4 toes. If not, then you have an EE chicken. Does anyone have a picture of an Ameraucana with 4 toes? I'm trying to find out if I have EE's or Ameraucanas.
Thank you,
I have a 3 1/2 month old silver lace to which still trying to find, through this group, her/his gender. But, as looking over pictures on line it seems the hens are puffier than the roosters. Is this so?
And does a rooster always have the white patch on the side of his neck?
Thank you group.

Thanks group.
A bear attacked the coop, lost 4 and 2 remained okay but traumatized.
Since this attack my 1 year old barred rock has been laying almost white eggs. She always layed brown. Does anyone know why? Do you think she is still traumatized? One reason could be, she lost her sister, they both were...
